Horizon master wins large settlement after whistleblowing incident

The master of the container ship Horizon Trader has won an appeal at a US court and been awarded over $1 million in damages following a whistleblowing incident. The court found that Loftus’ right to be free of retaliation for whistleblowing was violated, and that Horizon Lines could not provide clear evidence that he would have been demoted regardless of his actions.

Marine debris clean up barge arrives in Alaska

The Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation informed that a marine debris cleanup barge has arrived in Anchorage for offloading. The barge spent 40 days in Prince William Sound receiving tons of debris that had washed up on the shoreline.

 

First vessel to discharge at new LNG Terminal in France

Teekay's Madrid Spirit was the first vessel to discharge at the brand new Dunkerque LNG Terminal on July 8, 2016. Dunkerque LNG said in a statement that a second boat is expected during the first fortnight in August, to carry out test runs of the whole system and performance tests.

LRQA informs that ISO 50001, the international standard for Energy Management Systems, has become the latest standard to enter the ISO revisions process.

Subsea Industries has initiated a series of planned ‘roadshows’ to demonstrate the zero environmental impact and simplicity of cleaning hulls protected with its Ecospeed hard coating.

Federal court puts restrictions on Navy’s LFA sonar use

The Ninth Circuit court has ruled that the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) had illegally approved a permit authorizing the Navy to use its high-intensity long-range sonar – called low-frequency active sonar (or LFA) – in more than 70 percent of the world’s oceans.

Fuel-saving ferries unveiled for Hornblower Citywide Project

Incat Crowther has announced the design of a new fleet of vessels for Hornblower, the operator of New York City’s new Citywide Ferry Service. The new service includes longer runs to the Rockaways in 2017 along with South Brooklyn and Astoria. 

 

Four Azipod units destined from Helsinki to Asia

Four ice class Azipod units are ready for approximately one month long voyage from Helsinki to Asia. The four thrusters have a combined power of 52 MW and will be fitted to an LNG tanker for the Yamal project and an arctic oil tanker.

 

Keppel to build three dredgers for Jan De Nul

Keppel Offshore & Marine has secured contracts from Jan De Nul Group to build three Trailing Suction Hopper Dredgers (TSHDs). The first two dredgers are expected to be completed in 2H 2018 while construction of the third dredger will require a notice within six months from Jan De Nul.
