Residents of a Chorley care home who hadn't even seen the street outside for more than a year because of the Covid-19 pandemic were finally able to experience freedom this morning.

Staying in our homes, not seeing friends and family, no weekends away or theatre trips or even impromptu meals with pals in the pub. In fact, all the things that make life worth living were taken away overnight. But for one part of our society life has been even tougher. Our care homes have borne the brunt of the Covid misery. Not only have they been the most vulnerable to the worst ravages of the virus, but the people who live in care homes have found themselves trapped inside for almost the entire time, with no visits from the outside and no hugs to brighten their days. When the inquiry into Covid takes place in the future, care home residents and staff will be front and centre of the investigation, both because of the way in which people were sent from hospital to care homes without testing and for how rigid rules were imposed on their running. How wonderful to see some of them start to open up and residents heading out. Let’s hope they enjoy every minute.
