Hey y'all,
Last week we lost a civil rights giant and pioneering figure in Hollywood with the death of Sidney Poitier. He was not only the first Black actor to win an Oscar and groundbreaker in entertainment, but a fierce advocate and activist in the fight for Black rights.
“I had a sense of responsibility not only to myself and to my time, but certainly to the people I represented,” Poitier said in 2008. “So I was charged with a responsibility to represent them in ways that they would see and say, ‘OK, I like that.’”
Thank you for everything, Sir Sidney Poitier.
Speaking of groundbreaking, the Golden Globes may have been scaled all the way down this year but a history-making moment happened. MJ Rodriguez won the award for Best Actress in a TV Drama for her role in "Pose," making her the first transgender actor to ever win a Golden Globe. Congrats, MJ!
Oh, and if you have student loans under Navient, F.K.A. Sallie Mae, you may be entitled to having them forgiven! The lender is cancelling $1.7 billion in debt for 66,000 students following an agreement to settle a lawsuit that claimed it practiced predatory lending. $1.7 billion down, trillions to go!
In the meantime, it's 2022 so go ahead and get in your bag but maybe also get you a new bag!
