Has announced that it plans to carry on operations at its historic Ohio City brewpub and gift shop at 2516 Market Ave. “indefinitely” while evaluating potential locations for a new combined production facility in Greater Cleveland. Great Lakes’ leadership, led by CEO Mark King, are in the process of vetting potential sites for a new production facility, ” including properties in Avon and on the Scranton Peninsula in Cleveland’s Flats,” according to the announcement. Clifton Blvd., Lakewood. Fear, a beloved Cleveland chocolatier, was struck and killed by a vehicle after being involved in a crash with a parked car on the 3700 block of W. 130th Street around 9 p.m. on Dec. 16. She was hit after exiting her vehicle. EMS pronounced her dead at the scene. Fear, 41, owned Fears Confections, an artisan confectionary that launched as a mail-order company in 2010. The Jan. 20 event will serve as a tribute to the mother, wife, friend and community member’s legacy, with a reception immediately following. EVENTS/TASTINGS Winter Wine Affair shifts venues for 2024 The 2024 Winter Wine Affair, a fest offering tastes and vendors, is scheduled for March.The tasting-shopping event is 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday, March 9, at Mr. Anthony’s Banquet Center in Youngstown. Previously it was held at Stambaugh Auditorium, about nine miles away. The Ohio Wine Producers Association’s event is billed as a way to break out of cabin fever. Ohio wineries will offer sampling and to-go sales, and assorted vendors will be on hand. It will include live music, food and craft vendors, prizes, raffle and more. PICKS OF THE WEEK Momocho Mod Mex modernizes Mexican food Momocho Mod Mex, 1835 Fulton Road, Cleveland, makes Mexican Food fun. The Ohio City restaurant has a modern interpretation of south of the border favorites. Having trouble choosing a margarita? Go for a flight and choose your top three of the nine offered. Ditto with the guacamole; the flight offers three of six. The Machaca taquito meat -- coffee and ancho braised beef brisket and queso fresco --comes with six small tortillas. The generous serving leaves enough meat to fill six more. While the décor – vintage Mexican wrestler prints – is a little unsettling, the food is tasteful. DETAILS Old school meets new flavors at Cent’s Pizza Cent’s Pizza, 5010 Detroit Road, Cleveland, might look like a hidden gem in a quiet neighborhood, but there’s a reason the pizza joint was one of the buzziest joints in Ohio City in recent years. Cent’s may be the coolest seat in town with its retro-styled dining room centered around a roaring wood fire. SPOTLIGHT Archie’s Hough Bakeries keep lemon coconut cake, legendary recipes alive for future generations: Classic CLE Eats & Drinks Food and Culture reporter Peter Chakerian offers a meditation on Hough Bakeries’ signature lemon coconut cake, a mythical, classic CLE dessert that looks the “Blizzard of ‘78″ right out of the box — a gleaming, double-deck white cake with lemon filling between the layers. It’s iced with buttercream frosting and windswept with coconut flakes! Hough had plenty of other classic tastes and flavors — daffodil cakes, butter cookies, Easter breads, hot cross buns, donuts — but this cake was so wildly exciting, so miraculously light and refreshing, that you couldn’t help but go for seconds. It was the best parts of a snowball cake and lemon tart all in one. You can still revel in its deliciousness thanks to Archie Garner Sr., Hough Bakeries’ longtime head pastry chef and the owner of Archie’s Hough Bakeries in Beachwood, which bakes and serves many of the Hough recipes, including the lemon coconut cake dream.
