Determined Grandview Kid, Owen Derby completes the RUN AJAX Kids 1K race in a cast.
Grandview  Kids
Believe in Themselves
Owen has cerebral palsy. This year, his body would not allow him the vigorous training he did last year to complete the Grandview Kids 1K RUN AJAX race all on his own.
His hamstrings and heal cords were way too tight for him to stand without his walker so Owen was in serial casting in preparation for hamstring, heal cord and gracilis surgery. He ran (yes, RAN) the 1K this year with his walker, with the cast on his left leg.We applaud his goals and drive!
We are happy to update he came through his surgery well and is now almost as tall as his mother when he stands.
We have a long road of physiotherapy ahead of us but Owen's goal is to get back to walking the track as soon as he gets the go ahead from doctors and to try to do the 5K without his walker next year.
If that is his goal, I believe he will do it!

Cathy Jennings and her daughter Stephanie Sutherland, a Communicative Disorders Assistant at Grandview are cheered on at the RUN AJAX finish line by Grandview staff

Cathy Jennings came from out of town, trained for months and persevered through pain and what sometimes was a literal uphill battle to cross the finish line, completing the 5K RUN AJAX race on October 1st.
It was a goal of Cathy's to participate in the event since she began rehabilitation for ankle and shoulder injuries two years ago.
"I got there early enough to see the Kids' race. If they can do it, so could I."
Cathy's daughter, Stephanie Sutherland is a Communicative Disorders Assistant at Grandview Kids and was her #1 cheerleader along the race route.
"Steph's coworkers waited for me to finish," she explained through tears."I think the whole spirit of the event, the families and the kids... it is just amazing! I can't wait to do it again next year."
Thank you for supporting Grandview Kids with RUN AJAX. Whether you participated, donated or gave a high-five to someone crossing the finish line, we are so grateful!
We are still waiting on the final tally, but it looks like approximately $30,000 was raised for Grandview Kids.
Thank you!
