What to know about the weather this week

It may be hard to remember all the rain and serve weather we had last week and earlier this month with the beautiful weekend we just had, but best believe the thunderstorms aren't done with us yet. 

 

The next three days will have an area of thunderstorms over Michigan. The area of storms will be in different spots each day. Here’s when you can plan on a thunderstorm at your location.

 

After the thunderstorms move through, a big blanket of smoke from the wildfires in Canada may visit our sky. Here is the smoke movement and concentration from one of our best weather models.

Gov. Whitmer not seeking vice presidency spot on Kamala Harris presidential campaign

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, who endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris for Democratic presidential nominee, said she would not run for vice president. Whitmer also announced she would serve as co-chair of Harris’ campaign.

 

Local elections: Four Democratic candidates have an opportunity to unseat incumbent U.S. Rep. John James in Michigan’s 10th Congressional District in the Nov. 5 general election. There are no Republican challengers.

 

While Democratic U.S. Rep. Haley Stevens is a favorite in Michigan’s 11th Congressional District, two Republicans and one other Democrat are vying for a chance to compete in the general election. 

 

Two candidates are running for a chance to fulfill Michigan’s 9th Congressional District in the upcoming August primary.

Michigan gets $129M from feds to accelerate development of large wind, solar projects

Receiving funds: Michigan will soon have millions more at its disposal to reward communities that host solar farms or wind turbines covering hundreds of acres, as well as support their expansion across the state.

 

The state is in line for $129 million in federal funds to accelerate the siting, zoning and permitting of large-scale renewable energy installations key to the state’s goal of rapidly decarbonizing the electric grid over the coming decade, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the Biden administration and Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer announced on Monday, July 22.

 

In court: A federal judge with property on Sanford Lake has recused himself from hearing a pair of lawsuits questioning the validity of a special assessment district that could be tasked with paying a portion of dam repairs following a historic 2020 flood.

Michigan police concerned about 'car surfing' kids riding atop moving vehicles

Speaking out: A Michigan sheriff’s department has issued a statement telling people to stop riding on top of moving cars. The deadly trend known as “car surfing” is believed to have originated as part of a social media challenge. The Macomb County Sheriff’s Office said it has responded to three different incidents in the past month.

 

Was missing, now found: A teen who has been missing nearly two months had moved in with a 44-year-old Rockford man she just met and later became engaged, Kent County sheriff’s deputies said.

 

Cases gone cold: On July 22, 2020, in Kalamazoo, on different sides of town, Dondreal “Frank” Watkins and DeVante Coleman were shot and killed. Their killers haven't been caught.

Connor Stalions to address Michigan sign-stealing scandal on Netflix

Stalions is finally going to talk: The former Michigan football staffer behind the alleged sign-stealing scandal that embroiled college football last fall will be the center of a new Netflix documentary, “Sign Stealer,” set to debut on Aug. 27, the streaming service announced.

 

Big Ten preseason poll: An annual survey of reporters across the conference found Ohio State as the clear frontrunner to win the Big Ten in 2024. Michigan was picked to finish fourth and Michigan State, who has had to overhaul its roster, was picked to finish 16th.

 

All bark and no flight:Victor, the frisbee-catching dog that entertained football fans at Michigan Stadium last season, won’t be able to take the field at the start of this season after undergoing surgery last month to repair a partially torn ligament in his rear left leg.

Take a ride: If you’re looking for live music, a history tour or an Instagram-worthy sunset selfie then check out Muskegon’s Aquastar. The historic boat has been cruising Muskegon shores since 1987. Aquastar cruises through the Muskegon channel and into Muskegon Lake four times a week.

 

Add this to your calendar: A slice of Bavaria is coming to Mackinac Island this fall. The island version of Oktoberfest will become “Macktoberfest” from Oct. 11-13 with the historic Island House Hotel as its home base.

 

Motown has lost a legend: The last surviving member of the Four Tops, Abdul “Duke” Fakir, has passed away at the age of 88.
