Good afternoon! It's Tuesday, March 14, and today's headlines include Republican-controlled state legislatures pushing for pro-family policies following the demise of Roe v. Wade, a report showing that Hillsong Church charges Compassion International $1 million annually to promote the nonprofit organization, and Pope Francis condemning gender ideology.
In the wake of the U.S. Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade, many Republican-controlled state legislatures have begun to push for expanded protections for mothers and children in low-income households, particularly in areas where abortion is now illegal or severely restricted. An analysis by FiveThirtyEight shows that at least six of the 14 states where abortion is completely or almost entirely illegal have enacted or are considering various measures that would increase support for pregnant women, mothers or young children. Seven other Republican-controlled states with less restrictive abortion laws are also considering similar measures. Among the bunch: the Republican-controlled Mississippi state legislature passed Senate Bill 2212, with the lower chamber passing the bill last week. The bill awaits a signature from Republican Gov. Tate Reeves. The measure would extend postpartum Medicaid coverage for new mothers from 60 days to a year. Meanwhile, Wyoming Republican Gov. Mark Gordon signed House Bill 4 last week, extending Medicaid coverage for postpartum mothers from 90 days to 12 months.
Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee has proposed adding a diaper benefit to the state's Medicaid program, covering the cost of diapers for the first two years of a child's life for mothers eligible for Medicaid. During his State of the State address, Lee said Tennessee would be the first Medicaid program in the U.S. to enact such a measure. He also wants to create a $100 million grant program for nonprofit crisis pregnancy centers and is seeking $18.7 million to boost the income threshold for pregnant women and caregivers to expand access to the state's Medicaid services, as well as $4.7 million to extend postpartum health coverage under TennCare. The governor also seeks $10.25 million for grant funding to expand adoption and foster care services. A recent Institute for Family Studies survey found that 41% of Republican parents said they would support a plan to boost state spending on low-income pregnant and new mothers. Continue reading.

A whistleblower's report shows that Hillsong Church has been charging child sponsorship and Christian humanitarian aid organization Compassion International $1 million annually to promote the organization at its conferences and worship tours. "Perhaps the most disgusting aspect of all the above excessive spending and private benefit is that Hillsong promotes ... Compassion International at its conferences and worship tours via on-stage presentations and permitting Compassion to have a display 'stand' at the event," the report reads."However, Hillsong does not promote Compassion out of the 'goodness of their heart.' Instead, Hillsong charges Compassion $1,000,000 per year for the privilege of being their child sponsorship partner," the 44-page report adds. Compassion International's global public relations director, Tim Glenn, told CP that he cannot discuss the terms of the contract publicly but that the organization has similar marketing agreements with "dozens" of churches around the world, asserting that the benefits of the arrangement with Hillsong Church outweigh the costs. "Compassion’s engagement with Hillsong has resulted in significant impact, as seen in the 118,963 children who have been connected with a loving, caring sponsor as a direct result of our relationship with Hillsong," Glenn explained in a statement. A California woman has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and child abuse after a newborn was found abandoned in a trashcan inside a gas station restroom. The Fullerton Police Department located the woman through surveillance footage and information about a vehicle that authorities believed belonged to the 25-year-old suspect, Venissa Maldonado. Police responded to a call from the service station around 3:35 p.m. on Thursday and performed lifesaving measures until the Fullerton Fire Department arrived and transported the child to a local hospital. The infant was reportedly in stable condition at the time of the press release. The police issued a reminder to the public about California's Safely Surrendered Baby Law, which allows parents or individuals with lawful custody to legally leave an infant at a public or private hospital, designated fire station or location the local County Board of Supervisors determines to be a safe surrender site. In this editorial, Dr. Michael Brown reflects on circumstances around the world that suggest many in society are losing their minds. Berlin recently declared that "women and 'non-binary' people with breasts" will be able to go topless at swimming pools after a biological male, who now identifies as a female and has female breasts, protested that he must cover his chest. "[T]urning logic and reality upside down will solve nothing," writes Brown, who notes that when a Swedish open-air swimming bath nixed gender-separate areas for the benefit of trans-identified individuals, men saw it as an opportunity to stare at naked women. Meanwhile, President Joe Biden presented the "International Women of Courage Award" to a biological man, and a state court ruled that USA Powerlifting must permit transgender athletes to compete against the gender of their choosing. "The bad news is that the world is really losing its mind. The good news is that many others are now waking up and saying, 'Enough is enough,'" writes Brown, adding that society must wake up "before the slippery slope becomes a steep and treacherous cliff." Despite Hollywood being an unpopular place for religion, it functions like a religious cult, writes Pastor Dan Delzell, who notes that cult leaders manipulate their followers to gain control over them, sexually exploit women and children, and express disdain for the Gospel message. As Kirk Cameron once described, "In this town, you can be a wife-beating, manic-depressive crackhead and everyone opens their arms to you. They say, 'Hey, pal, don’t worry about it. We'll get you into recovery. It's all part of the journey.' But if you become a born-again Christian and love Jesus Christ and want to share that with other people, they say, 'You've committed the unpardonable sin.'" Nonetheless, Hollywood's anti-Christian culture hasn't stopped Christians such as Cameron, Jim Caviezel, Kathie Lee Gifford and others from professing their faith. As actor Dean Cain said, "If it changes one person's heart ... then it's worth it." Read more.

Pope Francis condemned transgender ideology in an interview with the Argentine newspaper La Nacion last week, declaring that it is "one of the most dangerous ideological colonizations." The term "gender ideology" is often defined as a set of beliefs that characterizes gender as a social construct, not based on one's biological sex, and rejects the gender binary of male and female. It is often associated with the LGBT movement. During his interview, Francis suggested there is a difference between compassion for people who identify as LGBT and adherence to gender ideology. "I always distinguish between what pastoral care is for people who have a different sexual orientation and what gender ideology is. They are two different things. Gender ideology, at this time, is one of the most dangerous ideological colonizations," the pontiff asserted. He also lamented that the concept "dilutes differences" between men and women and described the "tension of differences" as "the richness of men and women and all of humanity," stressing that "growing through the tension of differences" constitutes an important part of humanity. During an episode of their "Let's Talk Purity" podcast, ex-porn star Brittni De La Mora and her pastor husband, Richard De Le Mora, shared four things people—married, dating, and single—should realize before they give in to sexual temptation. "Oftentimes, what happens is, the enemy is quick to tell you the benefits, but he doesn't talk to you about the repercussions of what would happen if you get into sexual temptation," Richard De La Mora said. To combat sexual temptation, the couple explained that Christians first need to consider whether their actions please and glorify Jesus. They should also ask whether what they are considering is worth affecting their anointing, with Brittni De La Mora adding that typically when someone falls into sexual sin, it is based on reoccurring temptations, and "it's the demonic thought that keeps coming back." Listen to the couple's full list of tips to consider before giving in to sexual temptation now.

Actress Jane Fonda suggested the "murder" of abortion opponents during an episode of "The View," prompting outrage from the pro-life movement. Fonda's remarks were part of a rant regarding the U.S. Supreme Court's decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, which overturned the 1973 Roe v. Wade ruling that legalized abortion nationwide. "Besides marching and protesting, what else do you suggest?" co-host Joy Behar asked Fonda, a guest on the daytime talk show. Fonda responded that "it does involve murder" as the panel continued to engage in crosstalk. Fonda's "Grace & Frankie" co-star Lily Tomlin asked Fonda to clarify her remarks, prompting Behar to insist Fonda was "just kidding" as Tomlin urged her "don’t say that" and Behar warned "they’ll pick up on that," referring to critics of the program and the mainstream media as a whole. As Behar reiterated that Fonda was "just kidding," the actress turned toward the panelist with an unhappy look on her face. Pro-life activist Abby Johnson was among those to denounce Fonda's comments, tweeting, "I guess she believes in killing people both in and out of the womb." Meanwhile, Rep. Anna Paulina Luna, R-Fla., who identified herself as a "pro-life member of Congress," announced on Twitter Friday that she had "notified Capitol Police of Jane Fonda’s call to murder pro-life politicians," calling Fonda's comments "dangerous," and "incredibly sick," adding, "this leads to targeting and can result in someone being seriously hurt." Actor Rainn Wilson took to Twitter to call out "anti-Christian bias" in the entertainment industry on Saturday. "The Office" star's comments came in response to the character of David, a pastor who takes a dark turn in HBO's "The Last of Us." Wilson wrote, "As soon as the David character ... started reading from the Bible I knew that he was going to be a horrific villain. Could there be a Bible-reading preacher on a show who is actually loving and kind?" During the "When We Are in Need" episode, the character—who pastors a small church in Wyoming—is depicted as a cannibal who attempts to sexually assault a young girl. During that scene, David cites 1 John 4:18, which reads: "There is no fear in love, but perfect love drives out fear, because fear involves punishment. The one who fears has not been perfected in love." Despite his comments, Wilson is not a Christian but has identified with the Baha'i movement in recent years. Read more.
