Google settles $5 billion privacy suit involving its Chrome browser
| It's the latest case to throw a spotlight on how big tech handles user data | Google has agreed to settle a $5 billion lawsuit brought by claimants who accused the web giant of privacy invasion by tracking their Chrome browser usage even when it was set to “incognito mode.” The class action lawsuit, which was filed in 2020 and involved “millions” of users, sought at least $5,000 in damages per user for violations of California privacy laws, Reuters reported. Alphabet-owned Google said it had been transparent about data collection in incognito mode, adding that it enabled website operators to better evaluate the performance of their content. Th agreement allows Google to avoid what could have been a difficult and revealing trial. The episode is also a reminder that most web users are rarely surfing anonymously, no matter how they configure their browser ... | |

SpaceX finally launches Falcon Heavy rocket for U.S Air Force mission | One of the world's most powerful rockets launched the X-37B space plane to orbit, but the specific details of the mission remain secret | On the fifth time of trying, SpaceX has successfully launched its triple-booster Falcon Heavy rocket on a mission to deploy an experimental space place for the U.S. Space Force. Mission USSF-52 lifted off from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida shortly after 8 p.m. ET on Thursday. SpaceX wanted to launch it earlier this month, but a series of issues, including poor weather conditions, forced it to call off four separate launch attempts, the most recent one on December 13. The Elon Musk-led spaceflight company live-streamed the early part of the Falcon Heavy's flight, including the launch and the landing of two of the rocket’s three boosters ... | |

This is Pi — one of the most amazing Android apps I used in 2023
| 'AI chatbots are nothing new in late 2023. But the Pi app for Android takes a radically different approach, and it's nothing short of amazing' | “Find me a few books on mindfulness and meditation.” I posed the question to ChatGPT, and it put a list of 16 books with the authors’ names divided across the two categories I described. It was a quick, albeit somewhat overwhelming, way to process the flood of information. For a different kind of response, I took my query to another assistant named Pi, and it held a conversation with me, just like a real human guide would seek to help you. Instead of getting bombarded with a dozen names, I was asked questions as if someone wanted to know how deep my awareness is about meditation practices and if there was a specific niche I wanted to explore based on my own spiritual needs. It’s earnest, empathetic, truthful, and humane guiding ... | |

Hate smartwatches? You might love this $250 hybrid watch
| If you're put off by the design of most smartwatches, then the Withings ScanWatch Light could be worth a look | Smartwatches and fitness trackers have been around for a while, but they always have one thing that sticks out like a sore thumb: A tendency to look like what they are — a geeky piece of tech that screams, “I’m a smartwatch!” But what if you want a fitness tracker that doesn’t explicitly tell everyone that? Or if you prefer something that looks a bit more analog but still has the smarts? Withings has created just that with its ScanWatch series, which all look like a traditional timepiece instead of a high-tech smartwatch. We already took a look at the Withings ScanWatch 2, but there’s also the ScanWatch Light, which is $100 cheaper with some compromises. Is the cheaper Light model worth getting to save some dough? Let’s take a look ... | |
