What we're reading today
By Bob WarrenJazz Fest crystal ball: The New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival lineup will be released Thursday. Who do you want to see headline the fest this fall? (Remember? The date was changed due to the crud, er, pandemic.) Our music guy Keith Spera offers this look into his crystal ball. Back home: Hours after being granted parole, former No Limit rapper McKinley “Mac” Phipps Jr. was released from prison Tuesday night. Phipps served more than two decades of a manslaughter conviction stemming form a fatal shooting in a Slidell club. In a case that attracted national media attention, Phipps and his family had argued he had been wrongfully convicted. Here's the latest from Ramon Vargas. What to do with the Esplanade? So what do you do with a shopping mall that's, uh, seen better days? That's the question a consultant hired by Kenner city government is trying to answer about the Esplanade. The shopping mall in north Kenner was once an economic hub, but has fallen on hard times. The consultants' solution? Get rid of the "mall." One-of-a-kind property: A Texas-based company well-known for its restaurants in the Lone Star state, has a new project in New Orleans: The Hotel Saint Vincent. Ian McNulty has a look at their $22.5 million project. Taking bets: Some news on the casino front in Slidell. Well, there’s no casino there now. But on Tuesday the St. Tammany Parish Council scheduled a special meeting to consider putting a casino referendum on the November ballot. And the company that wants to build a new gambling hall on a spot near the I-10 twin spans upped its projected investment from $250 million to $325 million. All this and much more in today’s Lunch Line. Thanks for taking a break with us. BW |
