Good morning,

Welcome to your daily news update from The Scotsman.

We're in the final strait of the Scottish Parliament elections: It's a week today until voters go to the polls.

An exclusive poll for The Scotsman can today reveal support for independence is at its lowest level for almost 18 months as the SNP’s hopes of a majority continue to dwindle.

The poll shows support for Yes is at its lowest since just before the 2019 general election which saw Boris Johnson's Conservative party seize an overwhelming majority in Westminster.

Here we answer the key questions - how many seats could the SNP win? Is it likely there will be a pro-independence majority? What will be the impact of Alex Salmond's Alba? And how well are the unionist parties - the Conservatives and Labour - likely to do?

'I knew my next venture would have to be something I was just as passionate about as music'

Let's step away from politics for a moment towards something a lot more wholesome. Frightened Rabbit drummer Grant Hutchison has opened a cider shop in Anstruther with his wife

“I’ve never really been a fan of beer and so my choice at the pub growing up was always cider,” he says. “Through touring with the band I discovered that there was so much more to it than the usual choices you get in the pub."

The shop, called Aeble, will be fully dedicated to the apple-based drink, selling close to 100 different varieties of it

Why a Scotland-England border after independence could be a good thing – Kenny MacAskill MP

“Borders” have been an issue in the election. What’s been surprising is that the SNP seem to have been surprised by it, failing to formulate lines for candidates or even providing more in-depth thinking on the consequences of their demanding an immediate return to EU membership.
