Meet the 'Mama-Taught' Chef Making Traditional Navy Bean Pies

At her booth decorated in warm and welcoming orange hues at the Ferry Plaza Farmers Market, you’ll find Zakiyyah Shaheed offering sweet navy bean pies, a recipe that she’s enjoyed throughout her life. “I’ve kind of grown up eating bean pie. I’m a third-generation Muslim, so it’s really synonymous with my childhood and with my culture,” says the owner of Baby Bean Pie.

Mushroom Pâté with Wine-Soaked Walnuts

This pâté from Maria Finn, author of Forage. Gather. Feast., can be made with any variety of your favorite mushrooms, preferably California-grown from Far West Fungi. Taste its earthy flavor spread over warm toast.

Ferry Plaza Farmers Market: Featured Vendors

Norka Hernandez is bringing Peruvian flavor to the Ferry Plaza Farmers Market this month. Enjoy dishes from Peruvian fusion cuisines like Nikkei and Chifa, or stick with a traditional ceviche. Visit Suyos Catering on Saturdays in November at the Ferry Plaza.

Root Down Farm is a queer-owned farm that pasture-raises chickens, ducks, turkeys, and pigs. Find them at the Ferry Plaza on Saturdays, and pre-order your pasture-raised Thanksgiving turkey online. Turkey pickups are at the farm during their Fall Farm Fest, November 23 & 24, open to the public (even if you don't reserve a turkey).
