I was known in my family for these things (among others). But my lack of artistic training didn't stop me from creating. For several years, I "published" a weekly newsletter called "The deGruy Family News."
Although I can now both sew and make art, I think these newsletters were some of my funniest material.
I didn't go to professional art school but I went to Ger's School for the Artistically Impaired. I read everything I could get my hands on about art technique and started making. Reading, making, classes, making, looking, making.
For years. And still.
It adds up and works together, all that learning and making. From cards, to jewelry to polymer clay to art quilts/fiber art to collage to painting (AND BEYOND!)
I am an artist.
Artist Statement
I am Geri deGruy, a Colorado based fine artist.
My work is experimental, intuitive and focused on inner states. Creating usually begins with selecting a palette of color, mostly acrylic paints but often other materials as well... oils, graphite, collage materials, watercolor. Then the wild rumpus begins!
The painting itself and my inner stories propel the work as I lay down layers and layers of color, shapes and structure. The interplay and drama of color informs my vision. Often I only know what a piece is saying when it is complete.
Lately I've been exploring spaciousness. Simplifying and opening up the painting, while using many layers of paint creates depth yet leaves an overall impression of expansiveness.
I'm always trying something new, seeing what would happen if... So the work changes over time. It's a long journey, and the landscape changes as time goes by, each new scene fresh, unexplored.
