Gateway's Board of Directors approved spending more than $24 million in public dollars Wednesday to renovate the Cleveland Cavaliers’ home, Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse, but it’s unclear where the dollars will come from. What types of repairs? $7.9 million will go to proactively replacing elevators and escalators, and $16.5 million will be allocated for new broadcasting equipment. Gateway, of course, is funded by Cuyahoga County’s sin tax on alcohol and cigarettes. The biggest unanswered question is where will Gateway obtain the money to fund these upgrades? The sin tax has allocated $92 million to each of the city’s three pro sports stadiums through 2034. The problem is, the Cavs have already spent $82 million. The board is “working through the process” to find a money source and address possible impacts on funding to the Browns or Guardians, said Matt Carroll, the county’s appointee to Gateway’s board of directors. – Kristen Davis |
