JOURNAL 1/25/25 It is alarming for an old evangelical like me to have so much fun unexpectedly but this solo tour of California and Texas, just ended, was a joyful two weeks and I’m planning to do more. There seems, odd as it appears, to be a market for an aged stand-up comic who also recites poetry and leads the crowd in song and talks about the pleasure of being over the hill and free from ambition. I hung around with the clientele afterward and met people who’d driven great distances and also some Gen Z curiosity-seekers. For me, it’s the excitement of working 90-minutes from memory, aware that memory sometimes fails — one night I couldn’t remember the word “cognitive” and had to talk in circles looking for a synonym. Several times I simply came to a big blank and thought I was going to have to say Good Night and arrange for refunds, but no, I found a path forward. I didn’t mention Prexy 47 whatsoever, and we had a fine time and I tried to convince them that longevity is a happy thing, that life gets smaller and rather beautiful and you develop the art of Living In The Immediate Moment. And then came home, which is the best part of going on the road. The plane comes into LaGuardia at night over islands, bridges, a bay, and touches down. I say goodbye to Janis Kaiser the road manager and grab a cab and into Manhattan and over to the Upper West Side and up the elevator to our apartment and the door opens and there she is. Nothing like two weeks of motel rooms and backstages and airports to make you appreciate home. But the 90 minutes were a joy for an old guy who hopes to keep his wits about him.
