He was instrumental in selecting the T-shirt color representing the often seen Celadon Blue water of the Waimānalo coast. "It's a very nice place and we get a good crowd. The music tells it all." ~Cyril Pahinui As a tribute to his late father, Cyril Pahinui initiated the Gabby Pahinui Waimānalo Kanikapila in 2007. Since then, it has grown to become one of Hawai'i's premier celebrations of Hawaiian music. The Na'alehu Theatre, Pahinui Productions and Outrigger Resorts are proud to carry this unprecedented event forward to celebrate the musical heritage of Waimānalo, Gabby's April 22nd, and Cyril's April 2st birthdays. The festival is designed after gatherings remembered from Cyril's childhood days, when weekends at the family's home on Bell Street in Waimānalo were a continuous kanikapila. As in those days, the event attracts more than 100 musicians and gives thousands of fans an opportunity to witness some truly unforgettable moments, amazing performances, and one of a kind all-star jams by some of Hawai'i's greatest musicians who get together to play music in the park.

Cyril saw one of his most important roles to be that of teacher. At workshops, lectures, and in his own school, Hälau Mele Hawai'i o Pahinui (Pahinui School of Hawaiian Music), he has shared the traditional methods he grew up with, methods that are rooted in respect for the elders and based on the focused attention that is an integral part of oral culture.
The traditional method begins with nänä ka maka (watch), ho'olohe ka pepeiao (listen), pa'a ka waha (stay quiet), then hana ka lima (move the hands), when ready to ho'opili (imitate what you have observed). Emphasis is on personal contact with the kumu (teacher) and on learning not just technical skills, but the philosophy and values behind the music as well.

A common topic of Cyril's workshops often included his reminder to students, "listen closely, learn the words and the sounds of the tunings. Don't relay on the paper, iPad, or tuner. What will you do when you do not have them". Mahalo to Cyril for his obvious presence and for continuing to teach those who will now carry the music forward.....
