With Trump’s nomination of Brendan Carr to serve as the next chairman, we expect more media consolidation that will allow Trump-friendly conglomerates like the right-wing Sinclair to gain control of even more TV and radio stations. Carr is also committed to overturning the recently restored Net Neutrality protections and undermining the FCC’s ability to hold companies like AT&T, Comcast and Verizon accountable for abusing internet users. Carr has threatened to pull broadcast licenses of stations that fact check Trump or offer opposing views. This is a major violation of free speech, and Free Press is prepared to fight the Trump FCC in the courts of law. We’re worried about the future of public media. Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy are sharing details about their newly created, dubiously named “Department of Government Efficiency” — and they’ve called for removing all funding for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, a main revenue source for the hundreds of local NPR and PBS stations that air Sesame Street, Fresh Air and other beloved programs. Free Press has stopped previous efforts to cut public media, and we’ll do it again. We will never give up and we won’t stay quiet. Walking away from a fight isn’t the way we do things. Just one example: Look how long it took us to win — and then win back — the Net Neutrality rules we fought so hard for over the last decade. We will never stop fighting to protect Net Neutrality, combat attacks on journalists and defeat dangerous bills designed to silence nonprofits. We’re independent.
