Elon Musk's xAI startup raises $6B in bid to make waves in AI sector

Investors providing the second-round funding include Sequoia Capital, Andreessen Horowitz, and Saudi Prince Al Waleed bin Talal

Elon Musk's xAI startup has raised $6 billion in what Axios described as “one of the largest venture capital funding rounds of all time.”

Musk, who co-founded ChatGPT creator OpenAI before leaving it in 2018 following a dispute, appears keen to make waves in the fast-growing AI sector. As Axios notes, some of those pumping money into the venture include firms that also backed OpenAI.

The new money will be used to take the firm’s “first products to market, build advanced infrastructure, and accelerate the research and development of future technologies,” xAI said ...

iOS 18 will reportedly offer AI-created emojis, let users change app icons' colors

Prominent Apple tipster Mark Gurman has been sharing what we can expect from iOS 18, which Apple is set to unveil next month

A “standout feature” of iOS 18, according to Apple tipster Mark Gurman, will bring generative AI to emojis. It involves software capable of creating custom emojis on the fly, linked to what you’re writing. “That means you’ll suddenly have an all-new emoji for any occasion, beyond the catalog of options that Apple currently offers on the iPhone and other devices,” Gurman said.

Another new feature will let you change the color of app icons and place them anywhere. “For instance, you can make all your social icons blue or finance-related ones green — and they won’t need to be placed in the standard grid that has existed since day one in 2007,” Gurman said ...

YouTube videos are skipping to the end for users with ad blockers

It seems to be a move by YouTube rather than an issue with the ad blockers

YouTube has long been using tactics like pop-up warnings in a bid to persuade users to stop using ad blockers on the streaming platform. But now it appears to be cracking down in a much bigger way.

In recent days, YouTube users deploying ad blockers have started to notice that they’re automatically landing at the end of a video when they click to watch it, 9to5Google reported.

“Even if the video is just replayed, it skips straight to the end almost immediately,” the report said, adding that if you try to skip back, it just endlessly loads. When the ad blocker is disabled, the Google-owned streaming platform reverts to functioning in the usual way ...

Box office suffers worst Memorial Day Weekend in decades

Weekend winner Furiosa was expected to take as much as $45 million over the holiday stretch, but it fell well short

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga just beat The Garfield Movie at the box office in North America over the Memorial Day weekend, Variety reported.

Furiosa took in $26.2 million over the weekend and $32 million across the four-day stretch — well below expectations — while Garfield managed $24 million over the weekend and $31.1 million for the extended period.

“No matter the final order, it’s the worst Memorial Day weekend in nearly three decades, excluding 2020 when theaters were entirely closed due to COVID,” Variety said. Compared to the same time last year when Disney’s The Little Mermaid remake took in a whopping $118 million, the total box office take this time around was down by nearly 36% ...

Move over Hades 2. Another great roguelike just hit early access

The Rogue Prince of Persia is the latest excellent game to hit early access following Hades 2, Palworld, and Manor Lords

The Rogue Prince of Persia is an action-platformer roguelike developed by Evil Empire, the studio behind much of Dead Cells‘ post-launch support, Digital Trends reported.

“The Rogue Prince of Persia follows a prince who emboldened the Huns to attack Persia,” the report explains. “He can’t die, though, as every time he does, he gets sent back in time by his bola. From there, the Prince goes on run after run, fighting the Huns throughout Persia in order to stop them and get home.”

The Rogue Prince of Persia has gameplay that “feels incredibly polished” and is available now for PC via Steam early access ...
