An update from the Chronicle
Dear John,
As the toll of the coronavirus becomes more apparent every day, nonprofits and foundations are doubling down to act.
Nearly 550 grant makers have now signed a pledge to provide more flexibility to the nonprofits they support. The organizers of Giving Tuesday â usually held right after Thanksgiving â announced a major effort to spur generosity around the world on May 5. And my inbox has been flooded with notes from organizations finding creative approaches to keep connected with clients, donors, and constituents in virtual ways.
At the Chronicle, weâre also finding new ways to serve you. Our entire staff is now focused on reporting about the ways nonprofits and foundations are likely to be affected and what theyâre doing today â and need to do next â to continue essential missions.
Among the essential articles we've published in recent days:
Jim Rendon outlined the key steps to take now to shore up a nonprofitâs finances along with sources of help now available. Dan Parks and Michael Theis offered a primer on how to apply for emergency benefits under the federal stimulus bill. Alex Daniels explained what foundations are doing to make it easier for nonprofits to get money and took readers inside the deliberations of grant makers about whether to spend more. Emily Haynes examined how nonprofits that run walkathons and other fundraising events are retooling to create virtual events and find other ways to attract donations. Maria Di Mento interviewed fundraising experts to learn how organizations whose missions have nothing to do with coronavirus should approach their appeals. Weâve also been assembling a special briefing on Tuesday, April 7, so you can better understand what the federal stimulus bill means for your organization, including how to obtain aid and how to take advantage of the new universal charitable deduction. And weâre taking the questions you asked in last weekâs briefing on the economy and fundraising to create a new column to provide answers from top experts.
Those briefings, like so much of our coronavirus coverage, is free to everyone. But it is our subscribers who make this work possible, and we are extremely grateful that their support allows us to ask the questions and do the research you donât have time to do as you respond to all the new questions facing your organization. We hope youâll take a moment today to join our ranks of subscribers â and as you do, youâll allow us to do even more to help your organization cope in these challenging days.
Let me know how we can serve you better.
Stay well,
Stacy Palmer
