Hey Science Explorer, What if you could see what light is made of? Well, with a DIY spectroscope, kids will explore color spectrums, wavelengths, and how scientists decode light to study the stars. Here’s what you’ll need: A cardboard tube (hello, toilet paper roll) Black construction paper Scissors & tape A diffraction grating A light source (LED, flashlight, sunlight—just don’t look directly at the sun!) Try different light sources to compare their “spectral fingerprint”—and if your kid’s feeling artistic, have them sketch what they see with colored pencils. |

Now here’s a fun twist—ask your kid if they know what a CD or DVD is. (We used to use them for this project!) Their answer might surprise you... or make you feel very vintage. Hit reply and tell us their best guess. The funnier, the better |

And be sure to check out the Science Resource Center for more experiments that turn “why?” into “wow!” Keep shining, Home Science Tools |
