GRIM GRADUATION: The 80-year-old woman killed Tuesday at Xavier University was a mother of six and grandmother of 15, and had just watched her youngest grandchild graduate from Morris Jeff High School inside Xavier's Convocation Center. Outside in the parking lot, two women were fighting. On what had been a morning of celebration for dozens of families, somebody pulled a gun and began firing, fatally injuring one and wounding two others. ROCKY RECOVERY: Louisiana is pausing efforts to collect money from thousands of homeowners who accepted hurricane recovery grants and used them for repairs rather than elevating their houses. The decision comes after news outlets presented the state with evidence showing that its lawyers have stepped up the pace of court filings even as the state hopes to wipe away the lawsuits entirely. SEAFOOD ROYALTY: Three New Orleans chefs are in the running for seafood royalty. The trio, and nine more of state’s chefs, will battle it out at the 15th annual Louisiana Seafood Cook-off on June 7 at the Cajundome Convention Center in Lafayette, where the winner will be crowned the king or queen of Louisiana seafood. Welcome to the first day of hurricane season, sigh.
