From bad dreams to missed meals: How more frequent school threats are upending kids’ lives |
Thousands of Michigan students and their families have endured school closures and lockdowns with an increase in threats of gun violence, bombings and other attacks. Education and law enforcement officials are struggling to navigate the uptick as frustrated parents raise concerns about the threats causing fear and anxiety, learning loss, needed missed meals, work and childcare issues and upending family routines. There have been more than two dozen Michigan school threats to start the school year. More in education: Teaching young people about sexual identity in Michigan classrooms and enabling access to contraceptives like condoms are among the sweeping changes to sex education requirements unveiled by Michigan House Democrats last week. Report cards released: Michigan ranked 29th nationally this fall with 27.2% of hospitals earning an “A” letter grade for patient safety as assessed by national nonprofit The Leapfrog Group for fall 2024. 15 Michigan hospitals had their safety grades fall from the previous evaluation. |

Bipartisan bill introduced to preserve Michigan’s tipped wage system |
A new bipartisan bill would preserve the state’s current tipped wage system and draw out the impending minimum wage hike to $15 an hour by one year. State Reps. Graham Filler, R-Duplain Township, and Nate Shannon, D-Sterling Heights, introduced the legislation last week. The pair also introduced a bill to address upcoming changes to paid sick leave. While supplies last: Michigan started offering free contraception resources last week at more than 300 locations throughout the state. The Take Control of Your Birth Control program provides birth control pills, emergency contraception, condoms and family planning educational resources. The latest: A small group of demonstrators holding “White Lives Matter” signs stood outside of Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor on Saturday. |

Snow next week in Michigan? Here’s what we are seeing |
There have been some questions about possible snow next week. Here’s what we're seeing: The big picture is to get snow, we have to have colder air. At the moment there isn’t any sign of cold enough air for widespread snow over Michigan. Our meteorologist Mark Torregrossa doubts there will be any snow at all with the storm system late next week. Very warm for November: An overall look at the current surface water temperatures show all of the Great Lakes are running warmer than normal. Lake Erie has an area of water that is still 60 degrees. Traveling? Here are 10 road closures on tap this week in Michigan. |

Big money: A man admitted to stealing $40 million from a prominent Detroit nonprofit group with a 12-year embezzlement scheme. Fireworks, 1 million lights will kick off holiday season at Michigan park |
"A tradition for a lot of families": This year’s Christmas at Crossroads Holiday Magic will be kicking off on Black Friday at Crossroads Village & Huckleberry Railroad. The event’s opening night will take place from 4-9 p.m. Friday, Nov. 29, at the historic village located in Genesee Township. Time to shop: A big part of downtown Detroit’s annual holiday tradition is the pop-up Holiday Market, which is now open through January 5, 2025. It's located in Cadillac Square, just steps from Michigan’s tallest Christmas Tree and the adjacent outdoor ice skating rink at Campus Martius Park. A premiere event: Start your holiday season with warm nostalgia as you tour the Lakeshore’s historic mansion from the 1920s − both you and the home dressed to the nines for a vintage cocktail party. |
