Media Winners & Losers

MEDIA WINNER:
Chris Stirewalt

The State of the Union on Tuesday night was, to put it lightly, quite a show. The planned dramatic moments were many, from President Trump arranging a soldier's reunion with his family in the chamber, and awarding of the Medal of Freedom to Rush Limbaugh, to the steady flow of Democrats walking out and the finale of Speaker Nancy Pelosi tearing the speech in half.

But while most partisans, to include more than a few journalists, were praising one set of theatrics and condemning the other, on Fox News, politics director Chris Stirewalt was having none of either.

“What an unworthy government we have. How unworthy of the people of this great nation," Stirewalt lamented to Harris Faulkner. "‘I won’t shake her hand, I’ll rip up of his speech."

It was kind of awesome.

He went even further, which you can hear at the link above. But the gist is that he was fed up with the show and, despite the enormous pressure for a partisan take - on Fox to decry Pelosi or on CNN to decry Trump - he put his foot down.

It's rare to see in the press a genuine dissatisfaction with power any more, only the carefully curated distaste for the object of one's audience's ire. But Stirewalt took a step past the norm (in a good way). And that's a media moment.
MEDIA LOSER:
Charlie Kirk

Charlie Kirk is not known for his intellect. The young face of the college MAGA movement is perhaps best known for his Twitter presence, which he has leveraged into a large audience.

His bumper-sticker style tweets appeal to a disturbingly broad base of people without the will or ability to check if what he's saying is true.

We at Mediaite have frequently documented his more inane tweets, which he often, and remarkably, refuses to delete -- even in the face of clear fact checks or overwhelming mockery.

Mockery is what came for Kirk on Wednesday. In response to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's performance at the State of the Union, where she dramatically tore up her copy of President Donald Trump's speech, Kirk published a tweet that was somehow more over the top.

“US Code prohibits the destruction of government records," Kirk wrote. “This violation is punishable by up to three years in prison.”

Nope.

Many of Kirk's tweets are so absurd they don't merit the spilling of digital ink. But the suggestion that Pelosi could serve three years in prison for tearing up a printed out copy of a speech was so dumbfounding, we felt no choice but to cover it. We're sorry.

The A-Block

NOT GUILTY

"The Senate, having tried Donald John Trump, President of the United States, upon two articles of impeachment exhibited against him by the House of Representatives, and two-thirds of the Senators present not having found him guilty of the charges contained therein, it is therefore ordered and adjudged that the said Donald John Trump be, and he is hereby, acquitted of the charges in said articles. "
-- Chief Justice John Roberts, presiding.

President Donald Trump has been acquitted of the articles brought against him in the impeachment proceedings.

The vote fell on strictly partisan lines, save one GOP vote to convict the president on the abuse of power charge. 52 senators voted not guilty, 48 voted guilty on that charge.

The obstruction of Congress article of impeachment was rejected along partisan lines, with no such exception.

ROMNEY

Perhaps more noteworthy than the fulfillment of the fait acompli in the Senate was the solitary vote against Trump among GOP senators: Mitt Romney.

Romney gave an impassioned and, at times, emotional speech on the Senate floor expressing his reasons and personal convictions on the matter. He made his case, too, in a Fox News interview.

George Conway was taken by Romney's remarks. Thoroughly.

Others... less so. A rapidly delivered demonstration of the retribution Romney predicted in his speech and about which Fox's Chris Wallace warned.

“You realize this is war,” Wallace said. “Donald Trump will never forgive you for this.”

Of that, there is no remaining doubt.

Iowa Caucus Still a Thing

The slow rollout of the Iowa Democratic caucus numbers has hit a teensy bit of a snag.

To review: yesterday the state party released 62 percent of the overall results, saying those were the only numbers they could verify and would be releasing more as they could verify more of the raw data.

As of this email, 86 percent of the vote is in, but not without some, well, hiccups.

The Limbaugh Award

Rush Limbaugh was given the Presidential Medal of Freedom during the State of the Union on Tuesday night. It didn't go over well among liberals and progressives.

The View unloaded on it. WaPo's Jennifer Rubin even more so. And Mediaite's Tommy Christopher even MORE more so.

State of the Ratings

Across the board, the audience for the State of the Union on Tuesday night was significantly smaller than last year’s, and those of years past. But one network bucked the trend in a big way, and actually went up from 2019.

According to data from Nielsen, Fox News absolutely throttled the competition on Tuesday night.

ICYMI: Fox's Chris Wallace spoke with Mediaite about the claim — made by former Trump advisor Steve Bannon — that the Fox News anchor edited out an “embarrassing” portion of an interview with Donald Trump. Wallace made it plain he rejects the “off base" assertion.

Must-See Clip of the Day

I Love a Parade

The Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs had their victory parade on Wednesday. But before the celebration was even officially underway, there was quite a spectacle.

No one was injured, but there were arrests, after a car chase barreled down the parade route, ending with a PIT maneuver and crash... just yards from the spectators lined up early for the parade.

The scene was like something out of a movie, and stands as a tribute to the excellent work of the police in what could have turned into a terrible moment. But it didn't.

It just became an amazing set of video clips.
