Media Winners & Losers

MEDIA WINNER:
Chris Wallace

At a time when the president of the United States can't be counted on to provide accurate information about the pandemic spreading through the country, it sometimes lands on the media — its most responsible members — to educate the public.

Fox News Sunday anchor Chris Wallace offered some words of sense regarding President Donald Trump's “aspirational” Easter date to reopen the country: Follow the science.

“We are not doctors, we don’t even play them on TV,” Wallace joked on Fox News Friday, adding: “I would listen to the public health experts.”

“As bad as this is and as much pain as we’re all facing, the one thing that would be worse is if we loosen the reins and let some of the country come back, and that only spreads the virus and we get a second renewed wave, so follow the science,” Wallace said. “Whatever they say, I’m all for that.”

Wise words. Trump would be smart to listen. He shouldn't just take it from Fox's top anchor, however. According to Axios, members of the administration are trying to steer the president away from the Easter deadline he set in a town hall that aired on Fox News this week.

Trump, wary about the damage a shutdown of the United States is having on the economy, will be hard to convince. The more that voices on his favorite network tell him to listen to experts, the better.
MEDIA LOSER:
Sean Hannity
Landing a lengthy, exclusive one-on-one with the president in the midst of a national crisis would seem to merit a place in the winner column. But the Fox News prime time host's performance during the 40 minute phoner on Thursday night was so sycophantic that we have no choice but to slot him here instead.

Hannity's questions felt more like setups for Trump to crow rather than genuine queries designed to get necessary information, or to challenge the president in any way. On multiple occasions Thursday night, he had his control room staff display lists designed to make Trump look good. And there was not one bit of pushback throughout. Trump was allowed to claim, unchecked, that Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D-NY) exaggerated the number of ventilators his state will need — despite the fact that the Empire State has been the hardest hit by far.

The lowlight for Hannity came when he — astonishingly — complained about Cuomo fighting for his state to get life-saving supplies.

“I was kind of angry at Andrew Cuomo," Hannity said. "I had him on a radio for 40 minutes, great conversation. I grew up, was born and raised in New York. And then it is ‘I need 30,000 ventilators!’ and it was like ‘OK...' It was annoying me.'”

Hannity, in fairness, does not claim to be a journalist. But on Thursday night, the country needed him to at least pretend.

BREAKING: Fox Business Dumps Trish Regan

Trish Regan, the Fox Business host who had her show axed after a wild segment about the coronavirus being used as a political weapon to destroy Trump, was dumped by the network on Friday.

“Fox Business has parted ways with Trish Regan - we thank her for her contributions to the network over the years and wish her continued success in her future endeavors," the network wrote in a statement.

“I have enjoyed my time at Fox and now intend to focus on my family during these troubled times," Regan replied.

Rage Against the Dying of the Light

President Donald Trump on Friday morning raged against Republican Rep. Thomas Massie for threatening to block the coronavirus relief bill before it came up for a vote on the House floor, calling him a “third rate grandstander” who was just looking for “publicity.”

“He can’t stop it, only delay, which is both dangerous… & costly,” Trump tweeted, in part. “Workers & small businesses need money now in order to survive. Virus wasn’t their fault. It is ‘HELL’ dealing with the Dems, had to give up some stupid things in order to get the ‘big picture’ done. 90% GREAT! WIN BACK HOUSE, but throw Massie out of Republican Party!”

Conservatives and libertarians responded by defending Massie’s honor.

The historic $2 trillion relief package passed Friday afternoon.

‘You Will Shed a Tear Because You Will Remember the Lives Lost’

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has become a steadying voice amid a truly terrifying national health crisis, mixing in wacky family anecdotes with much-needed daily press conference updates on the alarming number of New York cases.

But Friday he reached back for something more, seeking to inspire National Guard members with a stirring speech about their fight with an “insidious beast.”

“And ten years from now, you’ll be talking about today, your children or your grandchildren, and you will shed a tear because you will remember the lives lost. And you remember the faces and you will remember the names, and you will remember how hard we worked, and that we still lost loved ones.”

AOC MAD

Given the chance to speak before the vote on the massive coronavirus stimulus bill, members of Congress spoke up, many loudly, but perhaps none more seriously than Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez who battered the bill, supported by Senate majority Republicans, as well as all Senate Democrats, calling it “one of the largest corporate bailouts” in history which provides just “crumbs for our families” during the crisis.

“I represent one of the hardest-hit communities in the hardest-hit city in this country. Queens, New York. Thirteen dead in a night in Elmhurst Hospital alone,” she boomed.

“What did the Senate majority fight for?” she asked. “One of the largest corporate bailouts with as few strings as possible in American history. Shameful!”

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson the First Global Leader to Contract Coronavirus

Boris Johnson, who initially was criticized for not taking the coronavirus outbreak seriously before changing course over the last week, announced via Twitter that he has tested positive for Covid-19.

He revealed that he developed mild symptoms over the past 24 hours and was self-isolating, but will “continue to lead the government’s response via video-conference as we fight this virus.”

Must-See Clip of the Day

Rachel Maddow Earns an Unlikely Viewer

A cable news segment so good it compelled Trump to praise one of his fiercest critics? Has to be a must see.

The president tweeted out a clip from Rachel Maddow's MSNBC show Friday afternoon, praising the host for her interview with U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Commanding General Todd Semonite.

It was an excellent interview. Watch it here.
