The Middle East’s Widening War

In the 100-plus days since Oct. 7, what began as a massacre by Hamas and a retaliation by Israel has remarkably widened. Clashes between Israel and Hizballah on the Israel-Lebanon border. Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen attacking commercial shipping and American naval vessels in the Red Sea.  Iran bombing targets in Syria, Iraq, and Pakistan, with the last returning fire. Will this process continue further? How much does that depend on developments in Gaza? Will outside powers be drawn into all-out war?

Richard Kemp is a retired British Army colonel and a military analyst. He was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in recognition of his intelligence work in Northern Ireland and awarded the Queen's Commendation for Bravery for service as a commander in the United Nations Protection Force in Bosnia in 1994. Mr. Kemp attended the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst and holds an honorary doctorate from Bar-Ilan University.
