The Biden White House recently declared pro-Hamas comments by the leader of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), Nihad Awad, “shocking” and “antisemitic.” It also canceled CAIR’s participation in a campaign to combat antisemitism. What is CAIR’s place in American Muslim institutional life? Did Awad’s remarks differ from his usual message? Is this a turning point for CAIR?

Dexter Van Zile is managing editor of MEF’s Focus on Western Islamism. He previously worked at the Committee for Accuracy in Middle East Reporting and Analysis (CAMERA), where he focused on efforts to delegitimize Israel. His writings have appeared in many publications, including the Boston Globe, American Spectator and Jerusalem Post. Mr. Van Zile has a BA from the University of Puget Sound and an MA from Western Washington University.

Ashley Perry is an advisor to the Middle East Forum’s Israel office. He served as advisor to Israel's minister of foreign affairs and deputy prime minister in 2009-15, and has also worked with Israel's Ministers of Intelligence, Agriculture and Rural Development, Energy, Water and Infrastructure, Defense, Tourism, Internal Security, and Immigrant Absorption and as an advisor to The Negev Forum. Originally from the UK, he moved to Israel in 2001. He holds a BA from University College London and an MA from Reichman University (IDC Herzliya).
