When we launched Hoops HQ six weeks ago, it was our intent to bring our audience inside the world of men’s and women’s college basketball. But we also believed that aside from the usual content about games, scores, rosters and the like, we could tell deeper, richer stories that would have an impact beyond the lines.

Today, we are doing just that by bringing you the saga of Mike Gminski, the former Duke All-American and NBA veteran who has been outspoken about his recent battles with alcoholism. Mike is doing more than just sharing his journey, which is expertly recounted by Alex Squadron — he is using it to help others, including with a basketball tournament this week in Charlotte that will raise money to benefit North Carolina’s first school for recovering addicts.

We hope Alex’s article moves you and that you will share it with people you think it will inspire. Of course, we’ve got plenty of other awesome content as well. It’s just another day here at Hoops HQ, where the best stories and most compelling games are always in our center circle.

Have a great Wednesday. —Seth

Mike Gminski Has Lived a Hard Life. Now He’s Living His Best One.

Mike Gminski was driving to his son’s football game in 2017 when his phone rang. It was Kenny Dennard, his former Duke teammate. The two have kept in close touch through the years, but this particular conversation was not one that Gminski was interested in having.

Dennard had arranged for Gminski, who was dealing with an intensifying drinking problem, to enter a rehab facility. But Gminski wasn’t ready to do that. In fact, he was livid at Dennard for attempting to intervene. “I went ballistic, dropping F bomb after F bomb on him,” Gminski says. “They had everything in place. All I had to do was say yes.”

While the conversation did not produce the result Dennard had hoped for, Gminski considers it a pivotal moment on his path to recovery. For the first time, he admitted aloud that he had a problem.

2025 NBA Mock Draft: Dylan Harper Closing in on Cooper Flagg for Top Pick

The 2025 NBA draft discussion is heating up with some new debate at No. 1 overall.

The top trio of the class is as advertised: Cooper Flagg’s versatility, Dylan Harper’s scoring and Ace Bailey's shotmaking. A few new names have jumped up into the next tier and might not be done rising, particularly a pair of bigger ball-handlers in BYU’s Egor Demin and Illinois’ Kasparas Jakucionis.
