With all the talk about discipline lately… … a lot of people have been asking how I maintain my own steely resolve. Excellent question. And the truth is for a while now I’ve been relying on a somewhat bizarre “discipline drill” to keep me focused on the things that matter most... Here it is: After tackling my most important work for 90 minutes first thing every morning… I then force myself to eat 5 dry kale leaves and wash it down with a shot of apple cider vinegar… straight. Next I peel off my shoes and socks and set out on a barefoot 10k run… … Greeting every stare from passersby with a loud “Hooyah!” When I return home I fill my bathtub with a splash of water and ten bags of ice. After dunking my battered feet... I submerge myself to the chin and don’t get out until I’ve read 20 pages of the driest non-fiction book I can find. Daisy has learned to keep an eye on me — and whenever I pass out from the cold or boredom — she wakes me up by licking my face. Finally, I wrap up my hardcore routine by completing as much of my afternoon’s work as possible from a “wall-sit” position… Until my legs give out from under me. I know, kinda weird right?? Ok… I hope my sarcasm was both obvious and forgivable. Because I shared that ridiculous routine to illustrate an important point. The biggest problem I keep seeing with mainstream “hardcore” methods for building your self discipline… Is they’re too hard. I’ll be the first to agree there’s a ton of mental benefits you can get from completing a grueling challenge like “75 Hard”... But for most people who just want to lose a little weight, work a little harder, and make small improvements to their life (because life is already good)... 75 Hard is complete overkill. It would be like sending a mall cop to the Navy SEAL’s BUDs… And the biggest problem with challenges like these is that going from “0” to “100” rarely works. In many cases it can even decrease your discipline and self-confidence because if you fail … you’ve proven to yourself once again that you don’t have what it takes. More importantly… these types of challenges actually distract you from getting the MOST important things done. With all the time you’ll spend working out twice daily, 7-days a week… And constantly running back and forth to the bathroom to pee because of the 4 Litres of water you have to guzzle… That’s a LOT of distraction from executing on your goals. Discipline shouldn’t make your life harder… It should make your life easier. That’s why the best kind of discipline… … is almost effortless. When you don’t have to rely on willpower (or even think) — and you automatically put your head down and bulldoze through every action and important task on your plate… That’s how you become an elite performer... develop unstoppable follow through… and unlock your full potential. That’s the power of Effortless Discipline... A topic I’ll be discussing more this week. But for now I have another question I want you to consider... How would your life improve if your discipline was easy, automatic, and effortless? What goals would you accomplish if you had systems and routines that GUARANTEED you’d take the right actions every time? Hit “reply” now and let me know your answer. I’ll be reading every reply that comes in. Success Loves Speed, Craig |
