BELL SCHEDULE - Jefferson Parish public schools were so badly damaged by Hurricane Ida that officials say it will be "tricky" to reopen before October, a full month after the storm. Orleans school officials are more optimistic, saying they will start the return to class Sept. 15. Here's the status of some other school systems:

ACROSS THE LINE - In another city/suburban contrast, Jefferson Parish began evacuating residents of senior citizen apartment buildings just two days into Ida's power outage. In New Orleans, it was five days, at which point five residents already had died.
SEVERANCE NOTICE - Louisiana health officials are revoking Bob Dean's seven nursing-home licenses after he evacuated more than 800 residents to a Tangipahoa Parish warehouse for Hurricane Ida and four of them died as conditions grew increasingly hellish over a period of days. Dean blamed the Health Department for their suffering.
