Bus crash: A bus hit a concrete barrier on Wommara Avenue at Belmont North in the early hours of Sunday morning, ejecting two passengers and trapping them for 30 minutes. A man was flown to Royal North Shore Hospital with spinal injuries, while four other passengers were taken to John Hunter Hospital with cuts and abrasions.
Varroa explorations: The CSIRO says it's working with key stakeholders by sequencing the varroa mite genome to help trace it, after a Newcastle outbreak caused chaos in June. The mite was first detected in sentinel hives in the Port of Newcastle, and outbreaks now top 100. A senate inquiry is examining biosecurity preparedness, with a focus on varroa.
Hillsborough Road upgrades: Hillsborough Road residents say work needs to begin on an upgrade sooner than the 2025 proposed start time. The road has received $35 million in funding in the past 12 months for two lanes in each direction. About 36,000 cars use Hillsborough Road each day.
Coal tax: Business Hunter says a proposed short-term tax on thermal coal exports could eventually become permanent. The federal government is due to discuss the tax, which is designed to help ease power bills.
Local COVID stats: In the week ending November 3 there were more than 1,100 COVID 19 cases across the Hunter New England Health Region. That figure is up nearly 150 on the week before. The Central Coast recorded 435 cases, up from 360 on the previous week.
Elliot knighted in rugby league: New Knights signing Adam Elliot says he's looking forward to getting into full contact training once he overcomes a pelvis injury. The 27-year-old says he'll be available for round one and is in good hands with the Knights medical staff.
Jets loss: The Newcastle Jets suffered another loss at the weekend, but coach Arthur Papas says it was the soccer team's best game this season. The Jets went down to ladder leaders Melbourne City 2-1 at Hunter Stadium. | | Visit our website for more local news |
