KQED’s commitment to public service and the values that guide our work
Dear Friends: As the dust continues to settle after a polarizing election, it’s an important moment to reflect on our public service, values and what lies ahead. First, KQED is here to provide the Bay Area with independent, fact-based journalism and quality programming. Over our 70 years serving the region, we have faced a myriad of transformational moments together – from earthquakes and climate disasters to sweeping technological changes that have altered our lives, communities and how we relate with each other. However, KQED’s commitment to public service and the values that guide our work never wavers, enabling us to steadily navigate constant change, however dramatic, and respond to what is needed for our Bay Area communities. The depth of our commitment was reflected in our stellar election coverage over the past several months. We provided KQED’s most comprehensive Bay Area voter guide ever, published both in English and Spanish with coverage of more than 500 races and featuring contributions from over 100 journalists. We also provided essential context for what was at stake on programs like Political Breakdown, Forum, The California Report and Morning Edition, our California propositions series on Bay Curious and The Bay, and through KQED Live events, which included a San Francisco Mayoral Debate broadcast on television and radio. Our work continues as we explore the implications of this election for our local communities and beyond. Make no mistake, the road ahead will be difficult – whether it’s the accelerating proliferation of misinformation, growing political divides or declining trust in public officials, institutions and media. The exceptional challenges we collectively face, such as climate change, international conflicts, public safety and affordable housing, will be exacerbated without a strong media ecosystem rooted in facts, accuracy, depth and context. You depend on KQED for trustworthy journalism and programming and we take our responsibility to you very seriously. We will continue to uphold your trust and stay true to our values, such as compassion, civility, decency, equity, respect, integrity and humanity. In whatever way you engage with KQED, we do not take your support for granted. You enable us to serve this community and you are the reason we are prepared for any challenges that come our way. With gratitude, |
