Last week I heard a report on NPR from the NIH, talking about the likelihood that immunizations for the flu and pneumonia help delay or prevent the onset of Alzheimer’s Disease. This is a powerful enough statement to cause seniors like myself to find a way to keep getting these injections.
I also have research showing that the Corona Pandemic will likely have a negative effect on the number of patients who get a flu or pneumonia shot this year. This is based on the difficulty of getting out, and the likelihood that there will be fewer outreach programs in underserved areas.
I want to make one more case for encouraging your patients to get their shots: Better Diabetes Outcomes. Fairuz Afram, PharmD Candidate, University of Colorado, has a compelling research article on the value of an annual influenza vaccine, and how this simple task can make such a difference in the prevention of many of the comorbidities associated with diabetes.
