Jessie Hoffman execution: Jessie Hoffman — who was convicted of abduction, rape and murder in the 1990s — was put to death by nitrogen gas on Tuesday in Angola State Penitentiary's death chamber. The execution was the first in Louisiana in 15 years and the first time the state used a new protocol that involves using nitrogen gas to deprive the condemned of oxygen. It took 19 minutes for Hoffman to die after the mask administering the gas was strapped to his far.
City travel: Last month, the New Orleans City Council banned Mayor LaToya Cantrell and other city employees from traveling. But a judge put that law on hold on Tuesday after Cantrell sued and alleged the council was overstepping its bounds.
Murder charge: Kenner Police booked a woman with second-degree murder in the death of a Kansas City reporter who died at a hotel while he was in the area covering the Superbowl. Adan Manzano had Xanax in his system and his blood alcohol was three times the legal limit when he died of asphyxiation, authorities said.
