Plus, five assistive tech platforms for people with disabilities
Newsletter for July 10, 2024 | About two weeks ago, before we got the EDA Tech Hubs Phase 2 funding announcement that left Baltimore off the list, we sent a local founder to cover one of the leading organizers' first-ever summit on local investment. The themes hit on by many speakers, including Mayor Brandon Scott, have since been central to reactions to the EDA "rejection." Scroll down to see how the Baltimore Region Investment Summit played out, through the eyes of someone who's worked in this sector for a long time. You'll also find a story from the leader of a major program for founders with disabilities, sharing his favorite assistive tech platforms. — Sameer, Technical.ly editor for Baltimore and DC | Image of the Day: Shelonda Stokes, Calvin Ball and Brandon Scott speak during the Baltimore Region Investment Summit. Five days after the summit, we learned Baltimore did not receive Phase 2 EDA Tech Hubs funding — and the same theme was common in reactions to that news. Still, the convening, hosted by the Tech Hubs consortium-leading Greater Baltimore Committee, left an impression on attendees like Pixilated cofounder Patrick Rife. "One thing that’s for certain," Rife writes, "is that we need stakeholders and leadership from every sector if we're going to successfully shepherd Baltimore and the surrounding metropolitan area to its full potential." ➡️ Find more on regional investment figures and philosophies in Rife's dispatch | AI, text-to-audio and more assistive tech | Few people have as much insight into tech and entrepreneurship for innovators with disabilities as Diego Mariscal.
