Your Monday evening update from the Lancashire Post
View email online | | | | | Oct 18, 2021 | | | | | | Good evening, Autumn is definitely here so I hope you're staying dry! With Christmas creeping nearer, we now have a recruitment crisis so deep across multiple industries that some firms are taking fairly desperate measures. Delivery giant Amazon is the latest to announce a bonus for workers - with one-off payments of up to £3,000 for full-time staff. It’s hiring for 20,000 positions ahead of Christmas. The share of job postings offering signing bonuses in the UK rose 75% in the three months ending August 31, especially for gas engineers, pharmacists, drivers, and social carers. (Source: Indeed) Meanwhile the North and Western Lancashire Chamber of Commerce is calling on the government to act faster to resolve the issue of recruitment. It’s survey of more than 5,600 firms found a majority of those in manufacturing and services reported record problems - with more than nine in ten employers in hospitality and catering having difficulty finding staff. Many companies are being forced to pay higher salaries to find staff. But with Amazon’s remarkable cash offer getting ahead of the pack - they are increasingly starved of options.
