Going once, going twice: An accidental auction

COVID-19 testing supplies are critical for many states in the process of reopening. But an administrative error on behalf of the Tennessee government almost led to a truckload of supplies getting sold on auction. The state accidentally listed 13 pallets of coronavirus testing kits and other supplies on GovDeals.com — a government liquidation store.

The supplies were not supposed to be sold there at all, and thanks to quick action on behalf of the state’s COVID team, they were removed from the auction site without much fuss. Still, one person managed to snipe a $150 bid before it was pulled. If they had nailed it, that would have been one heck of a deal. Testing for COVID-19 is a lot more complex than you might expect.
