Finished "Midnight Sun"? Che ck out these vampire books ⚰️

Emezi’s debut novel Freshwater was one of my favorite novels of this most recent decade; it was so stunningly original with its take on mental illness and Igbo ontology. So I was looking forward to reading Emezi’s sophomore effort, about an unusual boy named Vivek Oji, who is of mixed Igbo and South Asian heritage, and whose body shows up on the steps of his mother’s house in Southeastern Nigeria.

Flitting between the perspectives of Vivek’s parents, his cousin Osita, and Vivek himself, we learn more about his troubled history growing up in the town of Ngwa; his refusal to adhere to strict gender norms, and his ragtag group of queer friends, adolescent children of the Nigerwives, a group of foreign women who are married Nigerian men and have formed a little community.

Emezi is an engaging and evocative writer; their descriptions of small-town Nigerian life are vividly rendered. But I stumbled a bit with some of the plot points; there are two late revelations that in my mind felt too melodramatic and belied the tender core of the novel, which is essentially about this group of queer teens. But that I cared so much about what happened to the characters is a testament to the quality of Emezi’s writing. Get your copy. —Tomi Obaro
