Film & Documentary March 9, 2020 Letter from the editor: This newsletter arrives amid news that SXSW has been cancelled because of COVID-19. Cities are being brought to a standstill over fear of the virus. In such an environment, the communal experience of moviegoing seems less attractive. But we have coverage of plenty of films you can watch at home. Monica Castillo talks to Lauren Greenfield, director of "The Kingmaker", which is now available to stream. Likewise, Michael Glover takes a deep dive into the work of the director Steve McQueen, and Hikmet Sidney Loe looks at a newly discovered Nancy Holt film. American master Kelly Reichardt talks about her newest feature, "First Cow." And our festival coverage provides some terrific glimpses of what's to come this year, with roundups of Miami's Third Horizon Film Festival and Missouri's True/False Fest. Perhaps for now, we won't see you at the theater, but that doesn't mean you can't appreciate good films or good film coverage. Dan Schindel Year after year, True/False has provided a forum for filmmakers, critics, and viewers to to do the work of considering documentary outside of its traditional boundaries. Dan Schindel The acclaimed filmmaker remarked, “It’s still so shocking to me that in current times the big, white, strong man with the big voice holds any appeal to anybody.” Christopher Lee Inoa The short documentary Utah Sequences, previously thought to be lost, purely displays Nancy Holt’s vision of time and place. Hikmet Sidney Loe The serious-minded artist-cum-filmmaker is enjoying a full retrospective at Tate Modern. Michael Glover Embracing the full spectrum of Caribbean experiences and cultures, Third Horizon has created a dynamic community devoted to highlighting cinema from and about the region its founders call home. Dessane Lopez Cassell Filmmaker Lauren Greenfield talks to Hyperallergic about her documentary The Kingmaker. Monica Castillo Little of the information presented in Envisioning 2001 will be new to Kubrick diehards, but it gathers artifacts that offer a thrill for anyone who has ever been affected by the movie. Dan Schindel During the ’70s and ’80s, Sanders produced educational materials about labor issues and history. In 1979, he directed a short documentary about his political hero, which is available on YouTube. Nathan Smith Forward this newsletter to a friend!
