Dear Friend, Welcome back to my Week in Review newsletter. Please remember to follow me on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, and YouTube for regular updates on how I am serving the people of South Carolina! Fighting for Hard Working American Families This week, the Senate voted on H.R. 3746 - legislation to raise the debt ceiling. Despite historic inflation levels and the Biden administration’s record of reckless spending, the legislation failed to hold the President accountable to reduce our spending. H.R. 3746 makes historic COVID spending levels the new standard, fails to rein in spending for the weaponized Internal Revenue Service (IRS), and falls short of creating energy independence, which would bring down energy costs for every American. To support this deal would be to default on my promises and duty to South Carolinians to stand up to this President and his inflationary spending that has broken our economy. That’s why I could not support this irresponsible and broken debt deal. Read more about the debt deal here. Challenging Big Government Bailouts In August of 2022, President Biden signed an executive order to forgive student loans, a move which abused his designated constitutional powers and placed costs of up to 1 trillion dollars on working families. In order to protect American taxpayers from this unfair big government mandate, I joined my Senate colleagues in voting in favor of a Congressional Review Act (CRA) joint resolution of disapproval, challenging the Biden administration’s student loan cancellation executive action. I’ll never stop fighting to put money back into your wallet where it belongs. Read more about our CRA here. Protecting Our Data From The Chinese Communist Party The Biden administration’s weak foreign policies have emboldened our adversaries. We know the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) seeks to undermine the United States by targeting Americans online, stealing sensitive data, and breaching our data privacy. As of March 2023, four of the five most popular apps in the U.S. were developed in China, whose national security laws allow the CCP to compel app developers to control an app’s content or user data. That’s why I introduced the Know Your App Act to require app stores to display an app’s country of origin and give Americans the ability and choice to filter out apps from adversarial countries. This will provide parents with information to protect their children online, improve Americans’ online security, and increase data privacy. I am committed to strengthening America’s national security and protecting our families. Read more about the Know Your App Act here. Countering China’s Growing Aggression Watch Senator Scott’s full statement here. This week, the Senate Committee on Banking, Urban, and Housing Affairs held a hearing on China and the threat the CCP poses to our nation. As Ranking Member, I highlighted how the Biden administration’s heavy regulatory burden on American industry has incentivized our companies to take their business operations overseas, reducing job opportunities for hardworking Americans. It should never be easier to expand a business in China than it is here at home. I also expressed concern over the Chinese suppliers who are actively facilitating the deadly flow of fentanyl across American borders. During my opening statement, I urged for a return to the free-market principles the American economy is built on, which would unleash the United States’ ability to successfully compete on the global stage. I also highlighted my FEND Off Fentanyl Act, which would target the Chinese laboratories that supply fentanyl precursors to Mexican cartels. Read more about the hearing here. Spilling the #SCSweetTea on Downtown Florence The city of Florence is being recognized for its transformative efforts to revitalize its community! The town was recently awarded the 2023 Great American Main Street Award for excellence. This incredible milestone only comes after decades of hard work which took Florence from a broken and dying community to a proud southern destination point. What a testimony that change is always possible when we refuse to give up! Read more about this story here! Sincerely, |
