More information has been released regarding Prime Minister Petr Fiala's trip to the United States early next week. As well as his much-anticipated visit to the White House to meet with President Joe Biden, the Czech prime minister will also meet with the head of the House of Representatives, Mike Johnson, and other members of Congress. Also on the itinerary are a meeting with Czechs living in the US, a visit to the memorials of the late Czech presidents Václav Havel and Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk, and a speech at the Hudson Institute.
Czechia is negotiating a bilateral security agreement with Ukraine, Czech President Petr Pavel said at a press conference after the Three Seas Summit in Vilnius, Lithuania on Thursday. He said the document could be signed as early as May or June, but added that it is too early to reveal any concrete details about what exactly it will contain. However, he did mention that it would be largely to do with defence, and may involve supplying material or non-material help such as support with intelligence information or technologies, defence industry cooperation or the transfer of production to Ukrainian territory.
The lower house of the Czech parliament has approved the coalition's proposal to increase care allowances for people with disabilities and to increase support for the provision of social services in their home environment. From July, contributions to care will increase by roughly one-tenth to two-fifths.
The lower house rejected proposals by the opposition to increase some benefits by even more than was suggested by the government. The proposal will now go to the Senate.
Jenny Sividya, a survivor of the October 7 Hamas attack on Israel in which 1200 people were killed and 250 kidnapped, will attend Sunday's Culture against Antisemitism event in Prague, the Czech News Agency reports. The goal of the event is to commemorate and draw attention to the events of October 7, one of the organisers said. Jenny Sividy said that the October 7 Hamas attack is increasingly being disputed or denied and their only goal is to tell people that it happened.
Sunday's event will start at 2:00 p.m. with a march starting in Old Town Square and ending in the Wallenstein gardens, where the main part of the program will take place, with the stories of people who experienced the October 7 attack will be performed by actors. The event will also discuss the current situation in Gaza, where the UN warns there is a threat of famine and 33,545 Palestinians have been killed in retaliatory attacks by Israel.
Czechia has still not caught up with the EU average in terms of health even 20 years after joining the European Union, the National Institute for Research on Socioeconomic Impacts of Diseases and Systemic Risks (SYRI) stated in a press release on Friday. Mortality from preventable causes is 25 percent higher in Czechia than the EU average. Life expectancy in Czechia since the country joined the EU has increased by roughly four years, but the difference between the Czech (79.1) and EU (80.7) average life expectancies is still practically the same as it was two decades ago.
The SYRI says the typically unhealthy lifestyle of Czechs is mostly to blame, such as excessive alcohol consumption, smoking, poor diet and lack of physical activity.

The Prague Zoo has announced the birth of a critically endangered western lowland gorilla cub. The baby gorilla, whose sex still remains unknown, was born to 30-year-old mother Kijivu and 26-year-old father Kisumu in the early hours on Friday. It is already a second gorilla cub born in the zoo this year. A female named Mobi was born at the beginning of January. I discussed the latest news with the zoo’s spokesman Filip Mašek:
Travelling along Route 66, riding free by plane, going to a casino and taking part in a beer run. These are just some of the many adventures Czech traveller Vojtěch Pechar experienced on a hitchhiking trip across the United States, during which he didn’t spend a cent of his own. He spent three months travelling from New York to San Francisco, passing through 18 states, getting rides in 50 cars and covering a distance of 9,000 kilometres. He documented his journey on an Instagram account called Mullet na tripu or Mullet on a Trip, which refers to his rather unusual haircut, and which attracted more than 90,000 followers. I caught up with Vojtěch Pechar to discuss his unusual journey and I started by asking him what made him embark on his trip across the US without a single dollar.
There were scenes of great joy at Prague airport 20 years ago when three Czech journalists kidnapped in Iraq were reunited with their families. Vít Pohanka, now your Czechast host, was one of them.
