Frank is on a well-earned vacation, so this is Dan Schneier handling the newsletter this week. Welcome! The MLB trade deadline came and went, and wow was this a crazy one. This might be the craziest deadline in years from a volume of trades standpoint but also from the standpoint of big names who moved homes. We're going to check in all of the players in new places to see how they did on their debuts for their new teams, and we're also going to tackle the biggest news of the weekend -- Padres SS Fernando Tatis' injury and whether he'll have to ultimately have that surgery. |
Of course, as always, you can subscribe to make sure you get the latest episodes of Fantasy Baseball Today right when they drop on Apple and Spotify. |

Tatis injury fallout |
|
Padres SS Fernando Tatis is back on the IL again with shoulder subluxation. This time he will rest and rehab, but surgery is on the table -- and that's scary. Tatis injured his shoulder earlier this season. This occurred on Saturday when he was running the bases and slid awkwardly. He also injured his shoulder in spring training in addition to these two times in the regular season. Surgery doesn't seem likely, but it's on the table. |
Players to add if you lost Tatis: Rockies' Brendan Rodgers (47%), Marlins' Jazz Chisholm (75%), Reds' Kyle Farmer ... Rodgers didn't have any homer in his first 12 games, but he's hitting .287 with a 36-HR pace since then. He's our top option right now. If all of those players are already claimed in your league, Padres' Ha-Seong Kim went 2 for 3 with a homer and 3 RBI Sunday. Chris also agrees Rodgers is the most obvious option to pick up and replace Tatis. |
More bad news on the deGrom front |
Mets fans who were hoping for the best with more recent optimistic news surrounding the best pitcher in baseball, Jacob deGrom, got the opposite this weekend. DeGrom has now been shut down for two weeks after additional inflammation following a bullpen session Thursday. At this point it seems likely deGrom will miss most or all of August. |
One thing we've talked about a lot with deGrom is that there's always something going on with him health wise. Why are we more concerned now? This is a recurring injury. And forearm tightness can be tricky. |
DeGrom out for an extended absence leads us to this question: Is Max Scherzer the best pitcher in Fantasy right now as a member of the Dodgers? For now, Scott still has Gerrit Cole higher, but he has fumbled more than a couple starts since the foreign substance crackdown. Some others on the periphery of being the SP1 are Walker Buehler and Brandon Woodruff -- less so the latter. |

Alcantara returns to form |
|
Against a Yankees lineup with a lot of swing and miss but even more power, it's never easy to get through this lineup. For Marlins SP Sandy Alcantara, he reversed a bit of a slide he had been on by shutting down this high-upside Yankees lineup. Alcantara delivered 10 strikeouts and brought down his 3.29 ERA. Chris views him as a top-15 SP the rest of the way. Alcantara is not quite at the ace level he flashed in April and May, but he is settling in as a Jose Berrios innings-eater type and you could do a lot worse. Alcantara seems likely to remain an excellent Fantasy option for years to come. |
