Feeding Soil in Non-Growing Seasons

By Bella Blue

man planting petunias in a planter boxKnowing how to perfect your plant's soil is the best defense against diseases and unwanted insects. It's not to say you won't have any bugs or diseases but the soil is like a plant's immune system. The better the soil the stronger the plants growing in it.

Photograph Your Garden In Early Light - yellow New Day rose budI haven't had camera as long as most of you. I've just been picking up bits of information as I need it. I wouldn't know an 'f' stop from a short stop with the New York Yankees. I've always heard though about the wonders of early morning light. It is a great time to take pictures.

Early Signs of Spring (Apricot Buds)

By Benetta

Early Signs of Spring I am not very keen on cold weather. In South Africa, we are used to warmer weather, so this winter was particularly cold and unpleasant.

Protecting Cabbages from White Butterflies

By ShirleyE

Protecting Cabbages from White ButterfliesCabbage white butterflies are a menace. They lay numerous eggs on the underside of the leaves of cabbage, cauliflowers, brussel sprouts, broccoli, and other brassicas. The caterpillars that subsequently hatch can easily eat their way through your whole crop.

Easy Seed Tape

By likekinds

Easy Seed Tape - two dish mats clipped together with the paper taped to themI thought of this just today. It's a bit time consuming, but it does have its advantages. It's another one of those 'knit one, purl two' thingies, meaning you can pick it up when you have a few minutes and stop at any time.

Morning Glory Is Invasive

By DeBushe

Morning Glory Is InvasiveAs you can see, morning glories can be extremely invasive. There is a mobile home under the second mound of greenery. We made the mistake of planting the "seedless" morning glory from some branches I got from a neighbor.

PVC Pipe For Deep WateringBy sawing a piece of PVC pipe that can stick up from the ground about 5 inches and have about 7 inches below the ground you can have a great watering/fertilizing gardening helper.

Flowers That Attract Butterflies
Butterflies just love flowers. That's their drinking fountain full of the nectar they feed on. So be sure and plant flowers in your garden if you want them to come visit. Here are some of their favorites:
Create a Colorful Garden
Remove old worn out evergreen shrubs from your garden beds. Plant a few variegated shrubs, hostas, a few zebra grasses and add a few interesting rocks to create a brand new colorful garden bed.
Find Plants on Freecycle
This spring, I put a request for perennial plants on a site called freecycle.com and received so many replies I picked up more plants than I could use. The extras, I shared with friends and family.
Trench Composting
No more compost piles for me! I found the lazy gardener's way to enrich the soil. Buy a used blender at a garage sale. Set it out on the kitchen counter, put all the veggie/fruit scraps in it.
Bake Eggshells for Compost
I put eggshells in a tray at the bottom of the oven. They get baked and brittle every time you use the oven. Just keep adding to the tray until it is full.
Fade-proof Garden Plant Name Tags
If you take a short length of 1/2 inch water pipe and cut it lengthwise about 1/4 inch with a hack saw and then cut one side in to your cut, it gives you a curved embossing tool. Making a straight embossing tool is easy. Any piece of metal with the same thickness as your curved tool will do.

This Week's Questions
Growing an Avocado from Seed
My avocado tree is 6 months old now. I started growing it from a seed to be a houseplant, however, I'm not sure whether or not it can be. (Do I have to plant it outside?) I would hate for it to not be doing well. Do I just need to get it a large pot or do I have to plant it outside?
John Deere L110 Mower Won't Start
I can turn the mower from the top, but it will only turn so far then it stops like it's hitting something. It was mowing great then it just stopped. I have never had any trouble out of it. I was told this model was bad about the piston pin coming out and the piston not moving so it won't start or move any more.
