| June 23, 2022 A new environmental review says copper-nickel mining — no matter how it's conducted — poses an environmental risk to the Boundary Waters.
The long-awaited environmental study released Thursday by the U.S. Forest Service forms the basis of a proposed 20-year copper mining ban on federal land near the Boundary Waters.
The Biden administration proposed the moratorium in October. It would block new copper mines over 350 square miles of the Superior National Forest that lie within the watershed of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness.
Industry groups argue the government should instead evaluate a specific mine plan to determine whether the Boundary Waters can be protected.
