Police reform: In a sharply worded report, the monitor overseeing the reform of Cleveland police criticized the department’s administrative investigation into the chase and crash that killed 13-year-old Tamia Chappman. The report cited several deficiencies in the investigation, including allowing a lieutenant who assisted a supervisor during the chase to conduct the follow-up probe into the pursuit, writes John Caniglia.
Cuyahoga County Jail: A spike in drug-related incidents in the Cuyahoga County Jail, along with a sharp drop in staffing levels plagued the jail this year. In the last few weeks, Adam Ferrise reports, officials turned their attention to controlling an outbreak of coronavirus cases.
Senate race: Rob Portman’s surprise announcement that he won’t seek re-election in 2022 kicked off a mad scramble among state Republicans to get in to the race. Andrew Tobias looks back at who moved to enter the race in the past year and what it could mean for Ohio in the future.

METRO Nature preserve: The Cleveland Museum of Natural History will preserve 723 acres in Geauga County as part of the museum's most recent addition, reports Pete Krouse. The patchwork of parcels in Geauga County also includes a fascinating ‘ledges’ ecosystem.
Coyote sightings: Coyotes are common in Ohio and tend to actively avoid humans, but you might be more likely to see them in the winter, writes Robin Goist. Jamey Emmert, a spokeswoman for the Ohio Department of Natural Resources and Jon Cepek, a wildlife ecologist with the Cleveland Metroparks, recently sat down for a Q&A about these misunderstood creatures.
COVID-19 Daily numbers: The Ohio Department of Health reported 8,092 new coronavirus cases Monday afternoon, and 5,011 people in hospitals who have tested positive for COVID-19. Laura Hancock reports that the state continues to be in a coronavirus surge, with the delta and omicron variants behind the spread.
Nonprofits: While nonprofits are feeling the weight of financial stress due to COVID-19 across the country, many in Northeast Ohio are operating as normal with the help of COVID-19 relief aid like PPP loans, along with generous donations from their donors, reports Alexis Oatman.
CRIME DNA: Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Michael O’Malley’s office has used burgeoning DNA technology to identify three men who are accused of carrying out a combined six sexual assaults across Cleveland in the 1990s, Cory Shaffer reports. Two of the men, who were indicted in recent years as John Doe defendants, have pleaded not guilty to charges including rape. The third man died in 2020.
ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT NYE: The ninth annual Chagrin Falls Popcorn Shop’s popcorn ball drop is set for New Year’s Eve, reports Marc Bona. The ball will be on display at the shop through Thursday, Dec. 30, then it will be transferred to the Chagrin Falls Village flagpole.
