Waitangi Day

In the New Zealand town of Waitangi on February 6, 1840, New Zealand's founding document (later named the treaty of Waitangi) was signed. This treaty represented a formal agreement made between the Maori People and the British community and secured British sovereignty over New Zealand. The treaty of Waitangi has caused some controversy over the years, but is still treated as a public holiday in New Zealand.
