Local country star: Newcastle-based musician Finnian Johnson has been named a top 10 finalist in the 2023 Star Maker competition at the Tamworth Country Music Festival. It's considered Australia's greatest country music contest. Well done, Finnian! Walka Water Works: The Maitland City Council says a full reopening of Walka Water Works will depend on when Crown Lands can fund it. The facility will partially reopen from Monday after asbestos was discovered at the site in February. It's still off limits for weddings and picnics but open to regular users like parkrun. Pro rider champ: Singleton's Cody Heffernan has been crowned this year's Australian champion on the Pro Bull Riding circuit, after winning the finals event in Townsville. COVID stats: There were more than 3,000 cases of COVID-19 in Hunter New England during the latest reporting period. That's a jump of almost 800 cases on the previous week, but while case numbers are continuing to increase, they're rising at a slower rate than previous weeks. Teens arrested: Thirteen teenagers have been arrested over thefts of luxury cars and in relation to police pursuits in the Hunter Region. Strike Force Baste was set up by police from four Hunter Valley commands following a spate of home break-ins and luxury car thefts. Steamfest change: The date for the Hunter Valley Steamfest has again been changed, this time because of clashes with the Groovin the Moo music festival. Steamfest hasn't been held since 2019 because of COVID-19 and adverse weather earlier this year. It was scheduled for April 22 to 23 next year, but it's now been pushed back a week. Epic solar journey: A big trip around Australia in an electric car partly powered by ground-breaking technology has finished.
