Let’s make sure we’re all on the same page. What are “deepfakes?”

Special computer programs can make videos or pictures look like they show someone saying or doing something, but it's not real. It can make someone’s face look like it’s on another person’s body or make them say things they never really said.

These computer programs can make it seem like someone famous, like a celebrity or a politician, is doing or saying things they didn't actually do or say. These are called deepfakes. And this brings me to Ron DeSantis’ recent attack ad against Donald Trump.

First, a word between you and me

This next presidential campaign is going to be loaded with deepfakes. Don’t even think about dropping me a line saying, “Oh, Kim, you’re only reporting this 'cause you hate Trump” or “I knew it, you’re a Trump lover.”

I’m like the U.N. here. Put your politics aside so I can tell you what’s going on with AI and deepfakes. This isn't about politics. It’s me trying to make you tech aware and smart. Got it?

Here’s what you need to know

This week, the “DeSantis War Room” account on Twitter shared a video with lots of examples of Trump’s support of Anthony Fauci — you know, former White House chief medical advisor.

Weaved in with authentic clips of Trump and Fauci are six images of the two together. Now, half of those images are fake and AI-generated. What they show never happened. But the video sure makes it look like it did.

AFP Fact Check was the first to spot the fakes. Let’s take a look at the tells:

How can you spot deepfakes?

OK, it's easy to see those fakes now that we've reviewed the details. But what about next time you run into something strange online?

✅ This is important stuff, no matter your politics. Don’t be that person sharing deepfake images and news. Share this story to help the people in your life spot fakes, too.

🏦 No, your bank didn't text you: Phony text messages pretending to be your bank are the No. 1 scam now. Don’t fall for it. Get a fake text? Forward it to 7726 (SPAM) and report it to the FTC.

Stay tuned: Amazon’s following Netflix and adding commercials to a lower-priced Prime Video membership level. It worked for Netflix. They signed up almost 5 million customers for its ad-supported plan in the first six months, and over 25% of new signups are on the advertising tier.

Instagram shocker: If you have kids on Instagram, the site is boosting posts that promote pedophile content. Of course, Instagram says they’re doing the best job they can to stop this content on the site and it’s all its algorithm’s fault. What a pile of BS. Got kids? Get them off Instagram.

Kilauea, one of the world’s most active volcanoes, is on the Big Island of Hawaii. It’s been erupting constantly since 1983. Sometimes things are low-key. Right now, not so much.

Here’s a fun fact for you: There was once a golf course on Kilauea. The old clubhouse is still there, and the 19th hole was the caldera. I’m not joking!

🌋 If you’ve never seen a volcano erupt …

The best way I can describe it is … very waterlike. The surface ripples and bright orange magma shoots up. It’d be beautiful if it weren't so scary!

The good news is, according to Hawaii Emergency Management Agency, populated areas are safe from lava flows.

😑 The answer: Many people mistakenly think “Wi-Fi” is short for “Wireless Fidelity.” Actually, it means nothing. The Wireless Alliance needed an easy-to-remember name for the standard “IEEE 802.11b Direct Sequence.” They hired a marketing agency and they came up with Wi-Fi. Go ahead, use this trivia question to get a free drink next time you’re out.

😂 One more before you go: A man sits down at a bar and asks the bartender for the Wi-Fi password. The bartender replies, “You have to buy a drink first.” So the man orders a soda and says, “So what’s the Wi-Fi password?” The bartender replies, “You have to buy a drink first, all lowercase, no spaces.”
