Don't Weep for Parler as Amazon, Apple and Google Pull the Plug

Parler is not going down without a fight. The platform, billed as a free-speech haven, has sued Amazon for kicking it off its web hosting platform for what Parler claims are political and anti-competitive reasons.

Tech platforms continue to shun Parler. Apple and Google app stores are core distribution channels, but, as Scott Nover reports, there are plenty of dark corners of the web for people to congregate.

There’s always a bit of conflict about how much oxygen to give sites like Parler, which has no qualms hosting content that incites violence and hate. Platforms’ role in content moderation, the lengths to which they influence society and how to hold them accountable are thorny issues that need clear-eyed analysis rather than breathless reaction.

Big tech is under scrutiny. Facebook is detailing its preparations for inauguration day, David Cohen reports, (but the news highlights how it is still slow to act on other private groups featuring harmful content). For platforms like Google and Facebook, maintaining ties with sites like Parler is much worse for business.

Thanks for reading and have a great day,

Lucinda
