Extending the Life of Your Basil Plants

By poehere

Extending the Life of Your Basil PlantsIn Tahiti I have a large organic garden with two different types of basil plants. One is the large leaf Italian basil and the other is the small leaf basil. Initially I left the plants to grow and produce flowers. Periodically I would cut the plants. However, the plants would start to die off after a few months.

Mother Bat and Her Pup

By Gailmail4000

Mother Bat and Her Pup - bat and pup hanging from house sidingJuly 1st was a hot/humid day in Wisconsin. I noticed this mother and her pup slept out of the bat house very low to the ground where it was cooler. The pup is tucked behind her body, near her legs, close to the cedar. We have 34 moms in the bat house, it's a maternity colony.

Box of Blooms and Butterflies - black and yellow butterfly on flowersMy boyfriend and I bought some inexpensive seeds and had no experience with these flowers and little about starting them from seeds. This is the result! It is also the first of our boxes. It takes our breath away! The butterflies are just as enjoyable! Hope you enjoy it too.

By kaszuckerdesign

The Hypnotist (Coneflower) - closeup of a coneflower This simple flower turns into a hypnotic experience if one stares at it closely. Like an old-fashioned optical illusion, it starts to move and pull you in...truly inescapable! Now you try! Do you see it moving? Give it time.

Growing Blanket Flower

yellow and reddish orange flowersStart seeds indoors 6 to 8 weeks before the last spring frost date or sow them directly into the ground in spring. Seeds need light to germinate so do not cover them, simply press them into the surface of the soil. . .

Wood Ashes for Watermelons

By likekinds

watermelons with blossom end rotI have several old maple trees on my property. I'll hate to see them go. They are a comfort to me. Being old they drop lots of twigs. I was recycling the branches and twigs on the street until I realized wood ash could help with blossom end rot; they now have a purpose.

Soothing Effects of Lemon Balm Tea

By Coreen Hart

cup of lemon balm tea with fresh and dried leaves When I first was given a start of lemon balm, I had no idea what to do with it! The second season, I was pretty wary because it had spread over a large area. It spreads by seeds and maybe by runners underground.

Rooting Lantana Cuttings

By likekinds

rooted lantana cuttingsI tried rooting lantana several times without much success. I was using the standard method for taking cuttings. When I told a nice lady friend about my poor results, she told me I would have better luck if I took cuttings from the tips of the plant. Since taking her advice, I have had near 100% success.

Hang Jars of Cut Flowers in Your Garden for Color

By ~gloria

Cut Shasta daisies in hanging jar. This is an idea for an easy way to add color and interest to your garden. Hang jars of water around the garden in places where there's mainly just foliage. I use wire around the rim of the jar and then secure to tree branch, fence post, wherever.

Store Compost in Refrigerator
Composting makes great fertilizer for my garden and reduces waste. I have tried a number of ways to avoid walking to compost pile every time I have compostable kitchen waste, veggies, fruit, paper napkins, plates, etc. Everything I tried, even fancy counter compost containers, left me with fruit flies.
Clear Plastic to Keep Squirrels Out of Pears
As soon as I noticed the fruit being eaten, I wrapped the tree with enormous sheets of clear plastic that I bought in the paint department sold as dropcloths. I bought 3 of the cheapest, biggest ones, spent less than $10.

Can a Willow Tree Put out New Growth from the Roots?
Ok, we cut down a 70 year old willow tree. About 15 feet from where it was cut we are putting a swimming pool. There are roots in this area. My question is, am I in danger of a new tree growing under my pool where the roots were cut into for leveling the ground for my above ground pool?

Craftsman Riding Mower Smoking and Burning Oil

The mower continued to burn oil and smoke lightly. This year the smoke has been really noticeable and it is burning 40z of oil or more per hour.
