In today's newsletter, a look at Michigan's extended winter forecast, bird flu outbreaks kill 344K Michigan turkeys and the cause of death for a man who vanished from the Electric Forest in 2018 may never be known. |
The weekend is right around the corner |
We're halfway through the work week, making it the perfect time to start thinking ahead to weekend plans. Whether you plan on spending a cozy Saturday indoors or venturing out into the cold, there are plenty of things to get involved in this weekend. You don't have to dress up as a lumberjack to throw axes at this Up North spot. Stop by Tapped Axes, an axe throwing venue near Ludington, to revel in local lumber town history while having a bit of fun. The Tahquamenon Country Sled Dog Race returns to the U.P. this weekend for the first time since 2022. The race is scheduled to kick off on Friday, January 10 in Newberry. For family-friendly fun, here are five winter activities to check out at Detroit's Outdoor Adventure Center. |

Extended weather pattern shows we better prepare for a real Michigan January |
Bundle up: If you are a Michigan winter enthusiast, then the long-range weather pattern should be on your side. The last two weeks of January are the coldest part of winter according to long-term weather statistics. So it actually should be fairly easy for the natural weather pattern to bring Michigan some authentic winter cold and wintry precipitation in the last two weeks of winter. Think again: If you are dreaming of a warmer location and trying to get there this weekend, you may want to re-think your driving days. Another major winter storm is going to track from Texas across the Deep South, and the Southeast. Many of the major interstates we use to get from cold, cloudy Michigan to warm sunshine will have a zone of either heavy snow or accumulating freezing rain. Let it snow: By Wednesday night, a few places in West Michigan could see up to 6 inches of snow, the National Weather Service (NWS) said in a forecast update on Tuesday. The NWS forecast map shows areas near Ludington could get up to 6 inches of snow by Wednesday night. Areas near South Haven could see 5+ inches. |

Poultry farms ‘on high alert’ as bird flu outbreaks kill 344K Michigan turkeys |
Local poultry farmers are on high alert to protect their flocks after recent outbreaks of a deadly, contagious bird flu have impacted thousands of birds at Michigan’s top commercial turkey farms. Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) has been detected at six Ottawa County poultry farms in the last 30 days, with two of those cases detected as recently as Jan. 2, according to the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD). If a farm detects one sick bird, the entire flock must be depopulated, or killed, to contain the spread of the virus. In the six most recent outbreaks in Michigan commercial farms, 344,100 birds have been impacted in Ottawa County, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. All six outbreaks are listed as occurring at “commercial turkey meat bird” production facilities. Ottawa County is Michigan’s top county for commercial turkey farming, raising 70% of the state’s turkeys. Losing support: The Mecosta County Board of Commissioners has rescinded support of Gotion Inc.’s $2.36 billion electric vehicle battery plant in Green Charter Township. The decision walks back a previous Feb. 16, 2023 resolution that expressed the county’s support of the project that’s expected to create 2,350 jobs in the region. |

The road to the Super Bowl runs through Detroit. How the Lions can make it. |
What's next?: The Detroit Lions won two playoff games at Ford Field last year en route to the NFC title game. If the Lions can match that this postseason, they will be playing in the franchise’s first Super Bowl. The Lions are the NFC’s No. 1 seed for the first time, meaning their next game away from home is either Super Bowl 59 or next season. Now, the Lions, and the rest of us, are waiting to see who they’ll play next. More Lions news: The Detroit Lions opened the bye week with positive news regarding three key pieces ahead of the divisional round. Dan Campbell expects to have running back David Montgomery back for Detroit’s first playoff game. And the Lions head coach said they got positive news regarding cornerback Terrion Arnold and offensive guard Kevin Zeitler. The Detroit Tigers have re-signed right-handed pitcher Troy Watson to a minor-league contract, according to the team’s transactions log. Watson, 27, was traded to the Tigers in August in a cash deal with the Toronto Blue Jays. |

Cause of death for man who vanished from the Electric Forest in 2018 may never be known |
The family of Kevin Graves, whose remains were discovered by hunters near the Electric Forest music festival grounds on Dec. 30, may never find the closure they seek. Graves' remains were discovered a week ago on swampy, forested land near the 2,000-acre Double JJ Resort that hosts tens of thousands of campers each year for the Electric Forest music festival. According to medical examiners who spoke with MLive, it’s often impossible to pinpoint a cause and manner of death when remains are fully skeletal. Funny money: A Michigan woman who sold her vehicle on New Year’s Day for several thousand dollars soon learned she’d been duped — the money the buyer gave her was bogus. The man accused of scamming the woman with the counterfeit cash, himself in the U.S. illegally, is facing two felonies. Also in crime: A Bay City man has admitted to stabbing his ex-wife more than two dozen times at a gas station, an act he followed by leading police on a chase that ended when he launched his truck into an Uptown Bay City townhome. It’s the second time he’s copped to stabbing someone. |

Michigan college fined $2.5M for misleading students on future jobs, salaries |
A Michigan college must pay a $2.5 million fine for misrepresenting the job placement rates and potential salaries for its graduates, according to a federal settlement announced Tuesday. Baker College settled with the U.S. Department of Education’s Federal Student Aid office over violations of the Higher Education Act of 1965, the department announced on Jan. 7. In other news: Attorney General Dana Nessel is declining to pursue criminal charges against House Republicans and one rogue Democrat who skipped the final days of the lame duck session in protest. Nessel’s office did not immediately return comment about why she backed down from pursuing charges. In Washtenaw County: Ann Arbor officials are preparing to take the next step to consider a takeover of DTE Energy in the city, a question that could go before city voters in 2026. |
