Tonight 8.30pm | Don’t miss the gripping conclusion of EXPOSED as Caro Meldrum-Hanna and the team trace an intricate network of corruption surrounding the fatal 1979 Ghost Train fire.
| | Hi, It's Caro Meldrum-Hanna and Patrick Begley |

Thank you for tuning in to the first two episodes of the ABC’s investigative documentary series EXPOSED: The Ghost Train Fire. We’ve been inundated with feedback and support from people all over Australia and beyond, commending the brave families and witnesses. We’d like to give you a heads up about what you're about to see and hear in the upcoming episode 3 finale. In episode 2 we revealed the woeful police investigation and flawed coronial inquest into the deaths of six children and an adult. We unearthed multiple witnesses who heard and saw a group of males behaving suspiciously outside the Ghost Train, including one witness who heard talk of kerosene and matches, and others who smelt kerosene themselves. But were not called at the inquest. And then there’s the disturbing claims from witnesses who felt intimidated, bullied, threatened and hounded to change their statements, and others who were fobbed off or told by police to leave out crucial information from their statements. With so much revealed about the botched initial police investigation, signs are now firmly pointing to corruption on the part of the lead detective Doug Knight, and suppression of evidence of suspicious circumstances and arson. If last week's episode made you angry tonight's program will leave you reeling. Following a massive paper trail that includes internal police and government documents, we probe the potential motive behind arson as well as links to organised crime. In the gripping conclusion of EXPOSED we trace the corruption surrounding the fatal 1979 Ghost Train fire. New figures will break their silence and others will blow the whistle on not just the police, but even higher authorities. The extent of the corruption and the cover-up, which you’re about to hear in the words of those exposed to it, beggars belief. You might already be asking: who was Detective Inspector Doug Knight, and why did he do the things he did? Well, those answers are coming. You might also be wondering: why would someone set fire to the Ghost Train? The answers to that question are coming too. In a series of bombshell interviews, police insiders and judicial figures lift the lid on a “web of criminal endeavour”. “The corruption in this case, went right to the top”, as one former senior police officer bravely reveals on camera. The notorious organised crime boss Abe Saffron is in the spotlight. Did he employ bikies to set fire to the train? Why? How? Can anyone back that up? The answers to those questions too, are coming. One of the Ghost Train witnesses tells Caro an incredible story that contains another piece of the puzzle. After 42 years, people with important information are finally coming out of the woodwork. Because time is running out: this is the families’ last chance for justice. Already the parents of two of the children killed in the fire have passed away. The remaining families are exhausted. They want Australia to see and hear the untold story, and they’re demanding action from our authorities today. That action is long overdue. The 1979 Ghost Train Fire is shaping up to be one of Australia’s biggest miscarriages of justice. In the words of the many courageous witnesses and investigators: "It's time for the truth''. “It’s never too late.” Please join us tonight at 8:30pm Tuesday March 30th, ABC TV and ABC iview for episode 3 of EXPOSED:The Ghost Train Fire. If you missed episode 1 and 2, you can catch up right here on ABC iview. From Caro, Patrick & the EXPOSED team. |
